All else being similar the motors should use about the same amount of power. The difference is, the M600 is able to use more than the 500 without burning up. The 600 will carry more weight up a hill, out accelerate, etc.

So in my experience, the 600 has the POTENTIAL to use more power, but will not unless you tell it to.....

sure, but from a practical point-of-view, Level 1 for the M500 "DOES NOT EQUAL" level 1 on the M600.

The M600 will use more power, because of the way it has been programmed to apply the available power.. For example, if level 1 is 20% for both motors, for the M500 that 20% might be 50W, whereas for the M600 it might be 100W. (example only)

Anyway, I have both, and on a normal enduro ride, on the same trails, I use more power on the M600.. Both are fun, and with both I am tired before i run out of juice.

mate it's a bit hard to say.... it depends on so many things, in particular how much you pedal.

with the M600, I go from 100% down to 35% after 25km pushing hard on the pedals. (enduro type single-track, tight, steep)
with the M500 on the same 25km track, pushing hard on the pedals, I end up with maybe 50 - 60% (but it is a slightly slower ride)

I very rarely ride on level 5, typically I ride Level 2 M600, and Level 3 M500... because I like to pedal.

Anyways.. it's hard to say.. just get one.. it'll be great

Do you have 13A firmware on M500 or 10A (standard). How you would compare for example 5 level assit on M500 to level on M600? (i would like to estimate a difference in feeling)

No doubt about it, the m600 feels stronger.

Is it awesome? Absolutely yes. Do you really need it? Not really.. I can ride up pretty much anything with the m500 and have plenty of fun and speed.

I prefer the M500. But others who like to "level 5" all the way, might prefer the M600. It's really up to the individual.

Power is just power and if you have two motors doing the same identical task but with one taking longer ( a slower ride ), then you will use less power unless the efficiency of the motors is way different. In the case of the M500 and M600 both must be pretty similar efficiencies as they use almost identical mechanical parts and same firmware developers, just a bit more copper in the stator.

In off road Emtbing, every ride is different even doing the same tracks, it would be nigh on impossible to work out which motor is most efficient without a calibrated bench dyno. I guess you would get a broad sense but I find on some days doing similar tracks I get way different useage, I put that down to climate and or whether I have been out on the razzle the previous night

One thing is sort of coming a bit clearer though for me is that we now have a Brose, Bosch, Bafung motors with 3 very similar riders fitness wise and yet we all seem to use about the same wattage on a ride. My guess that motor efficiency is now pretty similar across all brands

I actually agree with you.. BUT the firmware is not the same. The fact is that level 1 on the M600 gives you more "oomph" than level 1 on the M500 does.

Sure if you had controlled conditions and pulled the same electrical power from each motor their efficiencies would be quite similar.. this is true.

But the reality is when you hop on an M600 bike, it pushes you around faster and therefore uses more power. Even if you ride on level 1. That's just how Bafang have programmed it.

Usually when someone asks a question like this they are worried about range.. " am I going to run out of battery before I have finished my ride"
Tough to answer... BUT if they're requirement is not high speed / power, their ride will last longer with the M500.

Thanks for sharing the latest firmware 46.8 for M600, I just installed and tested it.

I come from 46.6 and 46.7, I don't find big differences, maybe a little more progressive when starting, when stopping pedaling, the assistance cut is also much more progressive, smooth and prolonged.

The power at 1/3 remains at 10A maintained with peaks of 12A, at level 2/3 13A with peaks of 14A, at level 3/3 18A maintained with peaks of 19/20A maximum. Same as 46.6 or 46.7

If anyone wants me to try another file, i'll volunteer

Interesting that the overall levels have remained much the same.

Afaixeda I think you must have some way of logging peaks ? Any chance you could perhaps reset your number of levels to the max 9 and see if the lower 1 - 3 are still at 10A minimum ? Thats a high current for the lowest level.

With the 600's internal controller set to limit power to 18a, I agree. There's nothing wrong with your math. BUT if showing 20a on the display, the margin for error wouldn't need to be that great to see that. A little slop in the calibration of the controller's components, maybe a little more in the display? Much more than that, would have me wondering what was going on as well.
