Bafang bbs02 speed sensor

Does anyone know if the wheel speed sensor is a requirement for PAS only? This is proving to be the biggest headache of the entire install because the chain stay is so far away from the spokes on my fat bike. I have to figure out some way to extend the magnetic pickup another inch to reach the magnet and I'd rather just not have it on my bike if I don't have to.

Or...extend the magnet to reach the pickup. Might be easier.

Seems like the controller firmware programming has been changing a bit. Use to be it wouldn't lock it out. Or you could work around it by setting the auto off feature to "none". Then there are the electronic timer mods... to fool the system.

I'd just get an extension cable... like this one.

It's not the cable length that's a problem, it's the actual mount. My fat bike has a 197mm rear dropout so that means the chain stays are too far from the spokes for the sensor to reach. I have engineered something that should work well though.

If I had that problem I would 3D print an adapter.

When I had that problem some time back I used a piece of PVC pipe, drilled some holes into it so it could be cable tied to the seatstay and sensor. Not very elegant, but it's still in place and working.

You could also mount the magnet to the hub on the front or rear wheel if that's easier.
