There is a new and cheap mid drive kit out there on Ali: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001177050797.html

I was planning to electrify my full suspension MTB for a while and didn't do it due to low budget and rear wheel thru-axle standard, incompatible with 99.9% of all hub motors. Bafangs were too expensive.

There is absolutely no technical info such as torque, rpm and dimensions, but it it looked good and what the hell...I took a chance and placed an order. It arrived after 3 weeks:

With the 48v/17ah battery the speed is around 40 kmh max and the range is about 40km
Although the controller is claimed to be 48V 500W it actually draws up to 22 Amps which is closer to 1000w
I contacted them seller and he sent me controller wiring and some unclear motor specs:

It's a hub-like motor, with planetary gears and stuff.
The motor body spins along with the sprocket which is kinda cool. The mount is a solid piece 10mm wide. Comes with freewheel crank.Heats a bit if you don't pedal at all uphill. The chain is super loud, but I'll still recommend it. I'll post a video soon

The weight of the motor is about 4 kilos
6.5 kilos with the hub and sprockets and everything.
With battery the bike is 22 kg

I have this from november 2020. You can read (with translator of course) on this italian forum.

It's a hoverboard motor direct drive modified.
I modified the motor whit 25h trasmission (12-80) and it's very quiet. Original it's too long for mtb
I used a controller from pswpower, not the original.
with pas it's very, very similar to bbs02 500w.
about 1000 km whit no problem, but i changed transmission.
