Has anybody put a TSDZ2 on a Cannondale Trail 7 with 29" wheels? I just picked up a good deal on a 2020 model and I want to swap my TSDZ2 from my old bike. Any thoughts or suggestions?

It's a mid drive that uses the bike's gears. It doesn't care what size the wheel is.

If you're happy with the TSDZ2 and you don't mind its tendency to break off a crank without warning, there's no reason not to use it. I personally would not touch one with your mother's ten foot pole.

Hey Chalo,
can you please tell me some more about reliability of TSDZ2. I was about to buy it... Some people say it works without issues, then again I find some topics where people say it's not as reliable as BBS02.
Thanx,

Dule

It has a bottom bracket spindle that's grooved at the point of highest material stress, so it's designed to snap off under load. It has gears that fail in use often enough to be a popular replacement item. And it has unstable software to the point that there's a whole cottage industry/hobby of trying to fix it.

The standard software is stable and works decently for general use, but lacks some features that are preferred by more demanding users. As is the case with many systems here in ES, if a better open source software is easy enough to build, then someone will do it as a hobby. I don't understand why Chalo wants to point this out as a negative thing. But the mechanical issues he mentioned are true and somewhat limit the motor's use in heavy mtb riding.

A perfect motor from the shop? No.

With a few modifications? An excellent, efficient and refined commuter platform.

Simple heat mods, the OSF, and a very easy to slip in extra crank bearing each side. Not expensive modifications at all.

For me it fits perfectly in the DIY world.

Blacklite, I'm interested in doing a couple TSDZ2 conversions. The mods you mentioned sound right up my alley--would you please link to more details?

There are many different OSF builds depending on what display you have and the features you want. Try here for MBrusa’s that has options for different displays. And there is an excellent instruction manual.
