What kind of drive is this?

I saw this today in front of my local Lowes. Rear mounted drive motor turning a cog on the left end of the rear axle. I don't recall seeing anything like it whilst shopping for my TSDZ2 last year. Seems by and large just hub motors and mid-drives. Just curious what the community thinks of this arrangement and if there are any makers still out there.

It is not new. It is a Currie drive. Many on ES have one.
