FH212 DD hub repair

I have a strange problem with a nine continent FH212 motor. One of the halls died due to a short and I replaced all three with brand new ss41. Closed everything, tested each hall with a 5V psu and all seemed good. Phases not shorted either (no resistance turning the wheel when the controller is off). Yet I can't get any phase/hall combination run properly. Always some stuttering, weird noises or outright motor blocking (super high resistance when trying to turn the wheel). I tried running the same motor sensorless with a VESC, and that wouldn't work either. Any idea what it could be ? This is a DD hub - there are actually very few things that could be broken.
