I think rear view mirrors are kind of tacky looking. This thing has a built in WiFi access point. You just connect your phone by selecting it in the phones WiFi scan list. A cheap voltage converter or a 12v battery pack is all you need to power it.

Rear view cameras can be very useful for many good reasons, but using one to replace a mirror is like using a fork lift to move a balloon.

Guess it depends on how much $$ you want to invest, mirrors are cheap. But even if I had the space, I will never have a stupid mirror hanging on my handle bars. I like high tech stuff, like my tail light with its anti-theft alarm. I will report back on how well this backup cam works.

and i put these ones in my battery boxes, a heavy rain hitting the tarp that covers my trike sets it off

if people ask, i say its an immobiliser

The problem with cameras as mirrors is that the camera is immobile, and you can only see just exactly whatever is in it's field of view.

A mirror allows you to see whatever is being reflected in it, so all you have to do is move your eyes or head a bit and can then see stuff you couldn't otherwise see (and which the camera cant' show you). And the mirror works even if you don't have power--even if they're cracked. ;)

Mirrors have disadvantages, too, such as blocking some portion of your forward or side view, and potentially shaking (a lot), making them hard to see, etc.

Just some thoughts.

Another problem is that a cell phone screen is not visible at all times. Sun and angle are blinding it.

Nice idea, need to some research. Are there any with really long wireless range? Could be good for security. You can keep your eyes on the bike while popping in shop.
