I am awaiting the arrival of my ATS speed drive and just getting parts together for my latest build, just now I have an 7 speed cassette but I want to go to a single sprocket/freewheel on the rear, probably around 14/16 tooth,

What kit do I need?

I know I need a chain tensioner, possibly a surley singleator

I have an Alex's rims wheel with MAC from cell man, is there anything I need to consider, I.e. are there differences in the way freewheels connect to my wheel?

Should I consider buying spacers to make sure I get a good chain line to my Chainwheel at the front of bike

Is it something like this I need?

"It Depends". Sorry, but it does. Many 7-speeds are a simple freewheel - the thing is a unit, and the ratcheting mechanism is part of the cogset rather than part of the hub. There are IIRC some 7-speed cassettes around, and they would use something like what you posted. The common 7-speed freewheel variety will use a standard single-speed freewheel. You'll need the proper freewheel tool to remove the 7-speed unit. Installing the new single-speed unit can be done by hand.

For a really good explanation with visuals, go ask the legendary Sheldon Brown: http://sheldonbrown.com/free-k7.html.

Yes, get a spacer kit that has different sized spacers so that you can get a good chain line. If those two large spacers in the kit posted in the OP just so happen to match the chainline of the crankset I would be surprised.

In addition to the Singulator, Surly sells a variety of single cogs both freewheel and cassette.

Thanks guys great advice from all :)

If you use cassettes, nashbar has this setup

also, make sure chain is right size, SRAm pc-1 is a good single speed chain
