I do have these on my bike :
http://dx.com/p/vibration-activated-110db-bicycle-anti-theft-security-alarm-with-password-keypad-27127?item=6

But when I am in town I always hope that nobody will steel my ebike, even I have a very good lock.

I was thinking of installing an old cell phone at the ebike for GPS location and tracking, maybe a movement sensor that will trigger my own cell phone that I carry with me.
But then you need to have sim card with internet connection and pay for it monthly.

Would it be possible to make a cheap solution by using the Bike alarm motion/movement sensor and trigger some kind of a 1 km distance transmitter ?

Like a wireless doorbell but than triggerd by the movement sensor :

The range isn't 1 km but that gives an idea of what I want, you carry a small device that makes a sound or buzz when your ebike has some movement, if you are at the shop and you hear of feel the device ringing/buzzing you probably will be in time to stop the thief from breaking your lock :D

There are 1 km range transmitters like :

Bark control dog collar

Walkie talkie with 1 km range.

Garage door openers ?

Any suggestions ?

And something that triggers your own cell phone would even be better, but Bluetooth will never have a 1 km range. Other idea's maybe ?

I'm a bit surprised that the device you want isn't sold in every bike shop in the world by now. But I haven't heard of it made consumer freindly yet. Seems like with so many people with smart phones and internet, you'd be able to have your bike keep in touch with you. Pricy sure, but by now it shouldn't be a hack. It exists for dogs. You get a call if that dog collar leaves your yard by too much. Then it gets tracked on gps and you go find your dog.

Be really fun to go find your bike, you and a cop.

Same tech should transfer. It's a service you get billed for of course. But you should be able to set a bike gps to stationary, then get a call if it moves. Seems like the market is there, for bikes, motorcyles, cars, any vehicle.

If you are willing to pay for a sim card internet connection, than there are many solutions for a tracking device, I have had them in company cars.

I just found there are some 1000m range bluetooth solutions, probably illegal but maybe not undoable.

A movement detector is what we need, because if the bike is riding I will never catch up :D

That's what the gps dog collar does, if it leaves it's set coordinates. Seems to me like the same thing could work for vehicles. If the bike blows over you don't want a call maybe, but once it leaves the block, you gps track it wherever it goes. The phone gives you coordinates and you use a gps to go there.

A dog of course, is easier to spot once you know what block it's on.

Seems to me, the ideal thing is gps tracking the bike. Cops do it with bait bikes, but I don't know what it takes or costs. Knowing when it moved is not nearly as crucial as knowing where it went 2 days later, or whenever you get a cop to go with you.

Here is another GPS tracker.

Anti-theft devices, unfortunately are needed. Some place the choice is a beater bike or bring it inside with you.

Always use a lock. Opportunity thieves will just jump on a bike or,throw it into a van.

Does that first anti movement (A B C) device seem to work?

You can mount a personal alarm with a pull tab under the crank. I use a zip tie that pulls out easier. Run fishing line to a spoke, so,the alarm pin is pulled when the wheel turns.

Very interesting !

The only thing is you have to pay monthly for a sim card, but maybe it is still the best solution.

These can reach for about 1 km, I tested it. there is a ringing option so you can call the other device by pressing a button.
The ABC bike alarm works really well very sensitive vibration sensor, that made me think of building something to the Walkie Talkie to activate the ringing, and ring the second the walkie talkie that you carry with you.

No monthly costs but you have to carry a walkie talkie all the time while you have your cell phone always with you.

So one of these is probably the best, it is activated by vibration, a alarm that will activated my movement or is not good enough for me, than they ride the bike and you will be too late.

Also available for seatpost.

there should be a phone plan that is just pay for what you use.
I have one with zero monthly costs, great for use in dedicated devices.

Droid phone with free software is really the best option, you have a motion sensor and gps.
not to mention the software is already available and you can charge the phone off your battery pack

Some of the UK pay as you go sims don't have minimum monthly amounts to add or expiries on them- Asda and Tesco are two.

The vast majority of Pay As you |Go sims are like this. If you dog down into the small print, you'll likely find that the phone company will reallocate the number if there is no activity at all for 12 or 18 months. I take that to mean you just need to call your alarm once a year :)

Very nice find. I will probably order one or two headset trackers and use a prepaid simcard.

I picked up one of the A B C alarms. under $4. Looks like it does work, but crooks will figure them out quickly.
The alarm is rather wimpy.

Also, picked up a remote vibration alarm. seems much better since it can be hidden. $6. There is a YouTube video with the alarm removed from the case and put into the seat post. Unseen is better.
