Hey guys,

since Statorade costs 3 times as much as Ferrofluid in my country, is there any difference between it and just generic Ferrofluid?

Ferrofluids are not all the same. Many factors are affecting ferrofluid performance: weight, density... quantity, type and size of magnetic metal particles.

You can make your own pretty cheap. Receipts are simple. Test and class their magnetic and fluidity properties, then compare their heat dissipation property inside a running hub motor, and find the ideal composition for this purpose. Those tests, materials used, and strict composition/production, are for a fair part of the selling price.

As far as I understand (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong), Statorade is Ferrotec APG1110:

As far as I know, that's it. There are several formulations that would probably work fine. That particular one has a low viscosity, so should minimize drag.

I would not recommend DIY ferrofluid. The APG stuff will last much longer in service and it has a proven track record. The size distribution of the particles, the carrier fluid and the surfactant that keeps the particles from settling out are critical to long term performance.

Watch out as some types of "regular" ferrofluid are based on more aggressive oils/fluids that may dissolve the glue that holds the magnets in place. There is a thread here on E-S about ferrofluid with this info.
