Need Alternative to Sram Dual Drive 3

I damaged my Sram and can't get parts since Sram no longer produce gear hubs I'm looking for an alternative that I can match to the Bosch Motor, it's only 50 Nm.

I really miss the gear range. Looking for something easy enough to install. Something preferably with wheel rather than the hub itself.

Thanks.

No, searched, seems all supply is either gone or can't find one with all the parts attached like the shifting pin etc which is broke on mine along with the threaded bolt, the parts themselves just can't be got, the hub itself is working fine just can't shift gears so put a normal wheel on without the Sram but the gearing is all messed up.

Ah.

Well, I have a Sachs IGH, probably an S7, that I will have to make a shifting rod and the bit that goes on the end to push the rod in when the cable is pulled. That part's probably easy; the hard part is making the shifter itself so it correctly shifts to each gear position; will require experimentation.

I don't expect I'll get that done soon, but when I do I'll make a thread for it, so maybe it would help you fix yours then, as a spare for whatever you replace it with right now.

If you take pics of what's left of the bits on your shifter rod / cable attachment / etc, I might be able to suggest something you could build a new one with, if you're up for that.

FWIW, I believe from what I've been reading on various sites, that as long as it is from the same hub series, so same number of gears, you should be able to use the shifter rod and end piece from any other SRAM hub, and probably from any Sachs hub of the older version of the same series/number of gears. So if you find anyone selling one of those hubs, complete (even if the hub itself is broken in some way), you could try it on yours.

I'll see if I can find the parts catalogue I downloaded because the current ones does not show the list of parts any more. That might help.

Sheldon Browns website Harrys Cyclery sells parts for the Shimano brand IGH, surely SRAM has parts available. Perhaps ring up your local bike store and see what they can do, if they can do anything.

The parts are impossible to find , whether Sram have any parts left I don't know.

S.O.L. drop a pretty dime on a new IGH

Were the gear ratios good when you had the Dual Drive 3?

HPV Scorpions were equipped with DD3's you may want to watch Bentrider classifieds. I have a pair of them, but not willing to part with them. Here's the latest, hub only, and I suspect George snapped it up, but can't say. Search BR classifieds for SRAM.

Sturmey Archer also has one, typ[ically in the $100 range new.

I never seen one like that, cassette and IGH all in one, now that is cool.

Gear ratios were pretty much perfect on the DD3 and it shifted well under load.

Does anyone know anywhere in Europe where I could get a hub with wheel build ?

I could ask around one of the bike shops in Dublin who might do it.

What would be the best match for the DD3 ?

For a wheel build I usually recommend poison-bikes. I guess the cannot help you with the Dual Drive.

Dickten Fahrräder (http://dickten-fahrraeder.de/) in Wuppertal actually build and sell bikes with the 27 speed SRAM Dual Drive. Maybe they can sell you spare parts, a new wheel, or a new hub?

Thanks, it's worth asking them at least. :)

Sturmey Archer has current production 3 speed cassette hubs.

You can get 8 and 9 speed SunRace cassettes with 11-40 gear range now, too. With one of those, you might not miss the extra range you got from the internal gears.

o00scorpion00o...several options listed below:

A. Luna sells the SRAM DD3 assembly, you could buy another one. BUT SRAM and everybody except Sturmey Archer have discontinued production of the 3 speed internally geared hubs so parts availability is going to become more and more difficult...except for the Sturmey Archer hub.

B. Go with a new Sturmey Archer hub...I like them a lot but if at all possible, I would recommend going with something like the CS-RK3 which will allow you to run a disc brake and any cassette gear you like...you can use a derailleur and set up whatever ratios you want or just use a single gear and use the three speed hub...that will allow you to achieve perfect chain alignment. Why the CS-RK3...I had a buddy who constantly stripped the three little drive tabs on the ID of the gears used on most three speed hubs. If you have rim brakes...the CS-RF3 has the nine spline driver for cassette gears.

C. Go to a cassette or a freewheel hub. Both have advantages and disadvantages and would require a derailleur if you use more than one speed  .

There are a multitude of additional options but the ones above are the most common and simplest. Everything above is going to require you to lace up a new wheel except possibly "A." so just depends on what you prefer.

Chalo...hope you are doing well.

Sure do miss your input on my crazy projects  .
