from what I gather its 2 types of motor packed together like a sandwich. but actually 4 motors in total.

The two main electric motor designs are called radial flux and axial flux, which employ a fixed stator and one or two spinning rotors. Linear Labs classifies the HET as a "3D circumferential-flux four-rotor permanent magnet motor," combining radial and axial flux designs. Check out the video to see it in action, but the HET houses a single stator faced on all four sides by rotors, each side having the same polarity so that all magnetic fields move in the direction of motion.

My question is, can such a design be 3d printed in plastic and produce a torque monster in a very light weight space efficient manner for the ebike community?
 
No, or rather, yes but only the less important bits. Like nearly all motors that one is steel cored and that's the hard part, you could print many of the parts but the cores would still need to be specially cut and that costs $$$. You could use the same kind of arrangement with air core that could be 3d printed, I've been tinkering around with something like that for a while and it's not a trivial task, lots of complicated mathematics just to get something in the ballpark and even then many steel parts need to be made for something relatively compact and efficient.

EDIT: If you're interested in building a 3d printed motor there are some good designs on thingverse or if you want to build one from scratch it could be worth having a look at Lebowski's axial flux motors as a starting point:

Posted this to see how many other people had been prototyping 3d printed motors and throw this idea toward them.
Hoping in time that these leaps forward in larger ev's trickle down to the smaller ones.
 
if it is a scam then some companies listed in the autoblog article are going to be sorry as they are already partnering with linear to use their HET systems in cars and scooters. 2-3 years till we see the real thing allegedly.
 
If it does work then it perhaps neatly answers the question of whether flux from end turns in a normal radial motor produces torque or not. I mean, it doesn't, but in the past certain people have insisted it does. There'd presumably be no point to this "HET" design if end turns normally did useful work.
 
Since they don't provide any pics or drawings of the actual design, combined with fotos of the principles involved, I'm sorry but I have to cry BS to the claims. I want to see the magnetic architecture of this "magnetic tunnel" along with the copper layout that makes this thing work.

'3 dimensional circumferential flux' (which implies can't be made of steel) is somewhat reminiscent of a wavecrestlabs patent that went uncited.
but then who hasn't doodled a combo AF/RF.
