Controller Suggestion for MY1020

New member here.
I just got this electric Honda S90 conversion cobbled together enough to drive around today. Still lots to do BUT after one 20 minute ride around my neighborhood the bike stopped working. I assumed it was the battery that died, considering i had never charged it. After charging it however the bike was still dead. So a simple process of elimination led me to the controller. I opened one side and two capacitors straight fell out. The solder didn't fail, the capacitors straight sheared off.

Which brings me to my question, before i purchase another "kunray" chinese controller that may suffer from the same issue, is there another controller that would be a better substitute? This is my first foray into EV's so im pretty new.

You're going to have to be more specific about your battery and motor if you want any help.

Do you have a continuous and maximum current rating for your battery?

30Amp continuious, 90amp peak i believe

Look up "KT 30A controller" to find plenty of options. They will differ mostly in the kind of plugs they have. All of them will need some kind of KT display to configure and operate them.

I have used a few controllers over the years, but now tend to stick with Kelly Controllers. they are very compact, waterproof and I have yet to burn a single one of them out. They have protections built in for overvoltage/undervoltage, temps etc.

As Kelly are primarily a car motor controller maker, their Amp ratings are Motor side.

These are Tiny, like coke can sized, with everything densely packed in. Getting the higher voltage option means you can use any battery from 18v to 90v. Get the cable and program it from your PC (windows only :cry: ) set almost all parameters, such as max power, draw, regen settings, min/max V on the battery.

I'm running the KBS-X KBS72101X with a MY1020 and it's more than enough for that motor - I have burned one 1020 out so far, but that's because I make it push a quad with me and a kid on it. I should have put a thermal sensor on the motor and told the controller what my max temp was -- but I haven't - still...

Just NOTE the 1020s I have had (and some others) work better if the Hall sensors +ve is wired to 12V. As standard most controllers have halls running to the 5v.

Now you can get even more power, should you wish to, you can then just limit it in the software, until you inevitably want MORE POWER!!
