bought this car for the batteries but theyre at 0.5v :(
it was built by an Electrical Engineering student from UBC

now i need to figure everything out :D

IMG_20211018_155503528.jpg

had to move it off the driveway but all the batteries are dead and the 12v battery was at 1.5v

poppped the caps and put rainwater in the cells and connected it to 5s7p of 25R

IMG_20211019_075437.jpg

while thats working made a 4s5p of 30Q with copper foil and magnets

IMG_20211019_080715.jpg

disconnected each end of the deep cycles and hooked up the ebike batteries

that got the car moved

checked on the 12v battery, disconnected from the 25r pack, the voltage is coming back but???

the lithiums are 17s 61v, controller 72v and i was triggering the lvc of the controller with only 2 battery packs to get up a hill, needed 3rd pack to lose the volt sag.

going to try and save the lead acids , 12 lead acids, recycling shop pays $10/battery. im willing to spend $120 trying if not i scrap them and get my money back

back to work

measured the voltage of the 12s and its 12.1v need to get it up around 80v

hooking up 18v to the dead 12v that was 1.5v is working
i wonder if i hook up a 17s 61v bike pack if that will work???

ran some jumper wires and connected to a weak 17s pack for 30 seconds, nothing got hot , unplugged and voltage jumped to 24v but is fading fast

IMG_20211019_112812.jpg

plugged it back in and going to watch and see how it goes

IMG_20211019_112827.jpg

have 3 of these battery balancers and theyre whining a quiet noise

IMG_20211019_112838.jpg

check the 12v and its at 11v and the 18v is down to 17v

not working right now, waiting for permits, another project to play with but i might just sell it
havent decided

each battery is showing 5v

the QuiQ charger wont kick on unless it sees 50v

i wonder what will happen if i plug in the charger with the ebike battery connected to show 60volts to it???

IMG_20211019_114848.jpg

plugged in the charger and flashed error code, voltage too low
batteries are at 5.25v now, try again in a little while, i can reprogram the charger but ill wait

 It's funny seeing this here, I saw this truck for sale on craigslist and considered buying it, but I wasn't sure how practical it would be to drive.

Good luck with your project, it would be cool to see this thing rolling again under it's own steam.

its different, 5spd, no clutch :)

its like the lead acids stopped taking voltage from the pack, hooked up a 61v charger at 5 amps, shuts off at 69 volts

thinking tha Q charger might be programmed to 72v start up
the ebike charger is adjustable to 84v
going to let it charge til it kicks off then adjust charging voltage

got the charge upto 69v and tried the car charger
it kicked in :thumb:

thats a 15 amp charger, batteries are 235ah

i think the desulfator draws 4 amps

time to read up on the desulfator

turned desulfator on
cant find battery acid here in Surrey, can cross the border and go to Napa, 6 gallons for $40
i guess us Canadians are deemed too stupid by our leaders

reminds when i needed some ammonia nitrate, banned or had urea added to it. wound buying half a skid of cold packs to get it :D

i wonder if you can fire up a moonshine still to concentrate old battery acid :warn: :flame:

had to stop the charge while power was cut to the house for 4 hours.
charger was putting out 82.25v and 5 amps when it was unplugged

at 75v id get 1 volt sag when i punched the pedal
batteries settled at 74.5v
grabbed a hydrometer before restarting the charge and tested a few random cells, they were at 1.15

things are looking promising on the battery front :D

battery cells are all testing at 1.25 on the hydrometer
its 11C/52f outside took the car for a spin

5spd no clutch, no problems, no grinding or trying to match rpms, just shift

accelerating was drawing 100 to 150 amps/7000watts, and batt was sagging pretty good, theyre 7 yrs old

going to take the batteries/charger/desulfator and put them in the boat, thats why i bought the car

putting the car up for sale without the batteries for $750

printed 2 of these last night

ran the motor in neutral for 2 hrs at 15 amps
used 30ah and had 85% left on the gauge but i think thats just the gauge doing the math

when draining down 6 volt batteries, how low can you go? can i take them down to 5 volts under load??

just thinking if i can parallel 17s24p of 30Q to 60v of lead

Whoever gets this truck is going to be getting a good deal at that price. A salvaged almost-dead Li Ion pack from an OEM EV purchased for a few hundred $CDN would get it back on the road quite nicely, possibly with 30-50 miles real world range. Put a few thousand $CDN into it and you might be able to make a 100+ mile range EV out of it.
