Does bms voltage need to match the battery voltage?

I need a 17s 52v bms but can't find any so will a 17s 60v bms be OK to use?

17s at 52v? What kind of cells are you running?

Yes. Your BMS does no good if it doesn't work with your cell voltage.

BMSes are rated by cell voltage and string length. If you get a 17s that's good for a li-ion, it will work for a 17S li-ion. For a li-ion battery the max voltage will be 71.4 volts.

True, but this is how I think about it. Say you have a 14s LI-ion pack, and you put a LiFePO4 bms on it. You will only charge your cells to 3.65v each, and they will last longer then cells charged to 4.2v while not loosing too many watts due to undercharging.
