12" QS hub motor and tire valve

A place to discuss the repair, design, and customization of the bicycle itself, not the powertrain ( battery, controller, motor, etc ).

12" QS hub motor and tire valve

Post by jdevane5 » Jan 18 2022 3:15pm

I'm just about to put a tyre on my new 12" QS hub motor and have a problem with the tire valve not clearing the hub..
I've tried multiple valve types and no luck with clearance.

It will be a major safety concern if the hubs rubbing the valve as it rotates!

Anyone had this issue at all? OR a solution, searching for various valves for the 11mm rim hole.

Given the rim is 12" and its a pretty big motor at 10-12kw there is really no clearance..

I've attached a few pics, one from the rim looking through the valve hole that shows the hub
One of the many valves I've tried.
And the QS drawing.
I've dropped QS a line for advise also, I think there is a tolerance issue in manufacture.

How will it rub? Isn't the rim bolted to the hub?

Does the motor have a "dimple" or notch cut in it's edge somewhere? If so, I would guess the motor is not assembled to the rim in the right orientation, and that notch should line up with the valve hole.

If there isn't such a notch, you could create one. THen the valve stem will come out of the rim and sit in this notch.

There are both right angle and straight valves available for scooter tubes like that. Use the kind you aren't using now and see if that helps.
This is to express my gratitude to Justin of Grin Technologies for his extraordinary measures to save this forum for the benefit of all.

It will rub with vibration.
I think I have found a specialist valve to give some clearance.
The motor looks to be assembled correctly but there is obviously a tolerance issue between the two design features. Its not the best rim design.

You just need the right tube with the right valve angle, I dont know how common that is but I have seen some like that.
