Not sure if this counts as a custom build but I ended up using an off-the-shelf Steps system from Shimano on a 26" BMX:
Motor & Drive: Shimano Steps E7000
Battery: Shimano BT-E8014
Bike: Verde Modus 26"
I'm actually working on a custom hub-motor right now that should be quite a bit lighter than this Shimano system.
