Spark when connecting the battery killed the controller

Bypassed the key activated relay, and connected directly the positive battery & controller's wires. There was a spark in the connector, and the controller stopped working ever since.

It's a 48v system. Using XT90 connectors. It's a 40 amp continous draw setup.

Is this a common fault? What should I look for?

If it's like my controllers you have to connect the battery first through a resistor to charge up the front end (input) capacitors to avoid getting the spark when plugging in the battery. Maybe check the path from the leads to the capacitors to see if there's an open fuse, toasted current measuring resistor or burnt trace. Beyond that I'm not sure what else to check.
