I ran this new ebike build for approx. 3 hours, nothing heavy mostly flat pavement, it shut off a few times for no reason I had to stop the bike and power it back up, at times pedal assist would not engage sometimes until I hit the throttle.
When I was adjusting the rear derailleur with walk assist with the bike on a stand it would go into walk assist and then full speed and walk assist again and then it just died with a distinct burned plastic smell.

I'm trying to figure out what could have caused this, battery was charged to 80% when started

That was quick!
What's the response from the vendor?

Hi, dustNbone thanks for tuning in, I took the bike photo during the build before ever going on a first ride, really wish the answer was that easy, I'm working with Luna on getting a replacement and really don't want another meltdown.

Charged to 80% but what was the actual output? Tested by multimeter, not onboard indicators?

Did not have a multi meter connected while riding under load just the readout on the display.

Just a curiosity really. Not likely a battery issue but if it were mine I'd use my multimeter and get a static voltage.

Hi, sorry did not get your first question, the battery is fine I checked it with my Luna smart charger, motor seems fine too, really everything except the controller, had issues with it from the beginning.
The batteries and this whole setup is awesome, Luna is also being very supportive

Sorry I’m suspicious. But if you’re happy with the support you’re getting, all good. Me? I’d be checking battery output regardless of the Luna charger.

Luna sent out a free replacement controller they did not even charge me for shipping , honestly they only seemed to want to get my bike going again, thank you so much Luna.
I got it all back together took it out for a spin , so far ,so good, no weird behavior like the original, going out this weekend for a few hours will post more

I've never seen one burn up like that! My guess would be a bad solder connection on one of the phase wires got loose and started arcing. Nice it was covered by Luna.
