E-Grom Clone 72v battery upgrade recommendations -Update bought a Leaf Pack

I got a Jiangsu Xinri E-Grom clone with SLA batteries that are tired and need to be upgraded. It currently has 72v 32ah of lead acid in it. I used to do 46mph according to the gps, but only does 41-41mph now. I've been looking at getting some 70% capacity Nissan Leaf Gen 2 cells tested at 41-43ah from Greentec Auto. I think I can get 10 of them for around $600. I was also looking at possibly doing CALB Lifepo4 40ah cells but that would be more than double the price and maybe a little bit tougher to fit them all in the chassis. I'm looking for recommendations on how you guys would run your setups or what batteries you would choose. I also thought about running Chevy Volt cells but I haven't seen them as cheap or available as the Leaf cells. I'm also not sure how to connect individual Volt cells if I need to split up the pack to make it 72 volts.

Here's the measurements of the battery tray. I believe I can get 6 Leaf cells laying down and 2+2 on each side of the main chassis bar for a total of 10. I think I could possibly get 2 more on top of the chassis bar for 12 cells if I cut the plastic fake gas tank or maybe fab up one outta sheet metal. If I could find another plastic gas tank I would cut it up, but replacement parts are hard to find in the states.

If I go back 12inches from the front of the battery box, I can get about 8.5 inches in height which I believe should clear 6 Nissan Leaf cells stacked up.

I'm curious to see this build but none of your pictures have loaded. You might want to double-check how they were uploaded.
 
Most of the images are loaded now. If you want to put all 10 batteries in, you may want to consider widening the battery box. If you choose to only use 5 of those leaf batteries, this is an excellent tutorial about how to convert them from 2s2p to 4s1p [youtube]kAznO_p_rEY[/youtube]
 
Thanks for the link on the tutorial. That will be useful in the future if I have a project that can't fit as many Leaf cells. I would like to get 10 cells for now to keep the pack at least 72v 40ah. I don't wanna go much lower in the amp hours because the range would be terrible.
 
I just ordered one of these (the grom clone) and I already have a pile of leaf batteries.
I am planning to do this same upgrade when it gets here to get better range than stock.
Did you ever get anywhere with this upgrade?
 
Nah, unfortunately I haven't ordered batteries yet. The whole covid lock down thing happened here in Vegas so I didn't make any extra purchases.

Not UNfortunately, it's fortunate you didn't order some Leaf modules with 70% capacity. Those would be very worn out batteries likely to sag a lot. Years ago I bought some batteries from an outfit in Vegas. I forget the company name, but they shouldn't be too hard for you to find. What you want is batteries from a low mileage wrecked car, not worn out batteries.

I just purchased an entire battery pack from a wrecked 2016 Nissan Leaf with 18k miles. I was billed ~$1300 shipped, which seems like a great deal to me. The yard says the car has only been there 3 days so I didn't see pictures. I verified with the person that this is the entire battery pack twice, and they said yes and even put it on my invoice. I'll see if this actually goes through and if the battery pack still has decent capacity...

Since I was able to get a full pack (hopefully, not in my hands yet), I think I'm gonna go with 11 (I'm reading the modules are 7.5v each) modules for around ~82.5 volts if I can get them stuffed in the bike. 12 modules later but I think I'm going to have to upgrade the controller, motor., DC voltage regulator. I'm gonna go with the Cycle Satiator Charger - High Voltage model, up to 103v at 5A. Do you guys have any other recommendations? I've seen some guys using Mean Well chargers in series also.

This is what I use on my Boom Egrom. I'm currently using SCiB Lithium titanate but they kinda suck on energy density, only ~2x that of lead acid. But the charger is great so far, and has an led screen that tells you voltage, amperage, and how long it's been charging. I use the same brand for my longboard. If you have access to 220v, you should be able to charge at 13A with that model.

BmsBattery chargers are know for being adjustable with internal potentiometers I believe, although I haven't opened my charger to verify that.
I don't have any good pictures of my bike right now but I can take some on Monday.
I'm running a nominal 78v, charging to 85 because my ASI BAC4000 can't handle more than that. The battery would charge to 97v full. I measured and actually only got about 1kWh out, which means I'm only getting ~2/3 of the energy the battery can offer in a charge :/.
I have it set to 12kW right now (150A battery and 250A phase) and it pulls pretty hard. I use about 2kW continuous on level ground with no wind at 35mph. Getting 39 wh/mi according to my cycle analyst.

I knew it was too good to be true. The scrap yard cancelled my order and refunded my credit card. Maybe someone there bought it before they shipped to me because I don't see it up for sale at a higher price or anything. The excuse was the pack turned up missing. Anyways...

I saw that BigBattery is having a sale on complete Gen 2 70% capacity packs for $1350 after coupon code POWERWALLS. I was thinking about picking up one of those. Anyone in the Cali/Vegas area wanna split a pack? I could buy half, but really only need 12 modules for my project.
