Kim,
Love your work.
The Lipos are the way. I "Gangsta" charge them, using a Meanwell power supply which I had shipped from WA to Queensland. I run 8 x 5S 5000mA Turnigy, and charge them empty to full in around 45 minutes.
Can't want to see more progress on your machine.
My Turnigy 8 x 5S 5000mA (as 10S4P pack) are brilliant !
I have them permanently paralleled (after lurking forever, and PM'ing people for help) and charge them "Pirate" (on a Meanwell RSP-1000-48). I run a fuel gauge when using them, to monitor balance and remaining charge. I use BM6 when...
I get it. Great idea !
This will solve one of the problems with using shunts ... as I see it, shunts effectively reduce the the resistance in the circuit as they come on ... which pulls more current from the power supply just when less is needed !
I can't wait to here more.

Instead of high-jacking two other threads (Turnigy, and 1010B+ series charging) ... I've quoted and replied here ...
Rc-groups has a circuit to balance LIPO's that doesn't involve shunting. The thread is here: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=270580
It is very similar to...
How long are you thinking it will take to charge a 20S 10P pack, with 10A from a 1010B+ ?
I have a 10S 4P pack, and don't want to live with the 1010B+ (too long to charge, and way too long to balance).
I've arranged a CC-CV power supply for 26A at 48V (Meanwell RSP-1000-48). These are superb...
Good news from HobbyKing.
Posted it back to them. Almost immediately they emailed me they'd received it ... and today I get an email that a new one has been dispatched to me.
Very impressed :D
The Lipo addiction is growing (I feel the need ...)
Thanks. Yes I thought about an easy fix ... but looking through the vent, everything is charred and black. I have looked for other similar symptoms, and I found a story about a PCB trace to the large capacitor not holding its weight, and the capacitor giving way.
Actually, its not all bad. I...
Purchased a bit over a month ago, while running a cycle on a single 5A Turnigy Lipo (5S), and during the discharge on its first cycle, something gave way in the 1010B+ and it started smoking.
Smelled the smoke, ran and unplugged it ! Now it is dead.
All of a sudden, this NewB (me) has...
... and that is why I defer to people who know what they're talking about. Thank you. :)
The thing that worries me ... is leaving the Bike/Go-Kart switched on - with batteries connected. One of my sons is bound to do this. I'm assuming the worst - perhaps it is even left for a week or even...
I have created the circuit below, but as I am an electronics beginner, I could certainly do with some helpful comments, suggestions, or criticism.
I'm hoping the circuit will work like this:
1. At the start, the battery is physically totally disconnected.
2. Press the "start" button...
A very informative, excellent thread. Hopefully the right one for me to make my first post.
The good news - based on my lurking research here, my 9 x 5000maH 5S Turnigy packs turned up yesterday from Hobby City. 8 of them perfectly balanced. One not so good, with one cell around 100mV low...
