Target: 35Mph, Trek 820 Frame, 36 OR 72V. What would YOU do?

Hi All, Don't judge me, I normally don't stand for anything but high quality work, the whole platform will change soon. I prefer a custom TIG-welded Aluminium battery container as opposed to a bag and a microcontroller in direct contact with my legs. For the time being I'm riding this thing :)...

Target: 35Mph, Trek 820 Frame, 36 OR 72V. What would YOU do?

Hi All, Well, this project has taken an interesting turn. Initially I was limited to either a 36 or a 72V battery because of the source... "alarmhookup" on Ebay. He was known for his Samsung 2200mAH cells and the purple 36V 4.4AH modules. Well I waited too damn long to buy from him and, well, I...

Show and Tell: Homemade 60V 50A eBike Controller with OLED Display

No pictures yet (except my PCB layout) because it's still in the works, but I've decided to make my own controller; pretty much because I love electronics, but also because of crisp, bright, OLED displays. I've settled on "Blue", as it matches my Trek 820. I'll be uploading my progress here...

Serial connection for 2x 36v BMS batteries?

fechter, I think I finally understand why you recommend the anti-parallel diodes across each module of a series/parallel configured, BMS-protected battery. Some things you've said before led me to believe that you were to be trusted, and I definitely made the right call. It hit me like a ton...

I like how you think dogman dan 8) This is all highly intriguing... especially welding on disc brake mounts. Maybe I'll do that, and use the nice hydraulic calipers and discs from the seized-fork Trek 4500 frame. Hmm. I guess the process would be: Mount Disc Assemble caliper assembly to the...

Target: 35Mph, Trek 820 Frame, 36 OR 72V. What would YOU do?

I appreciate the previous words of warning. Sometimes it's hard to gauge how far statements on the internet go, but you should know these things ring in my head more than anything else. It pushed me to procure what I think may be a slightly more capable frame... a Trek 4500. It's outfitted with...

    6S LiPo balance plug arc

The spark is most likely due to a charged capacitor, instantaneously charging a discharged capacitor when the connection is made. Imagine connecting a tiny, but fully charged 12V battery directly to another tiny battery that is completely discharged. Big current flow for a short time, right...

Serial connection for 2x 36v BMS batteries?

fechter, would the diodes be necessary in a series/parallel arrangement? It seems to me that the parallel modules would safeguard the others... eisaiasjr, we may be attempting the same thing... do you intend on putting five of those modules in parallel, in series with another bank of five in...

    No weld: using 10x 4pc packs ?

This could get me flamed, but, I've been soldering 18650's for years with no trouble. Sand off the finish on the ends, use liquid flux, use a powerful iron with a big chisel tip, get the wire-end in position beforehand, and solder it quickly so as to not let the heat soak into the innards.

Target: 35Mph, Trek 820 Frame, 36 OR 72V. What would YOU do?

Thanks to you three for your thoughts, I appreciate it. I'm hitting the GO button on a 48V hub motor as soon as I can print the drawings and put eyeballs and calipers on everything. For now I'm assuming that the motor will clear the stock derailleur (Shimano Tourney TY300) and cassette (Shimano...

Target: 35Mph, Trek 820 Frame, 36 OR 72V. What would YOU do?

Thanks to each of you for such a useful forum. For my first-time build, I've got an older model Trek 820 that I'm ⚡⚡⚡converting⚡⚡⚡. I need to cruise at 35Mph, but my battery options are limited to either 36V OR 72V. Already, I seem to have found myself between a rock and a hard place. Am I...
