Giant DH-team offroad build. R&D thread

I don't know if you're aware of this, but those Giant bikes have non-standard rear axle dropouts. 'Normal' is 135x10 mm, these are 150x12 mm. May not be a problem for you, but I hadn't seen mention of it in your thread so I thought I'd bring it up. Just something to consider. E.

I think you might still find some interest at that price range, but personally I'd have to see what we're dealing with before I would commit. With a high quality shock that's not a terrible price (quite cheap compared to MTB frames). How much cost would you estimate heat treating would add? E

150 mm dropouts decrease your options. All 150 mm dropouts are 12 mmx150mm. I have yet to see a hubmotor that has 12 mm flats and a long enough axle for 150 mm dropouts. E

Sorry to burst your bubble, but a mongoose pro and a jamis dakar are each crap bikes. The Kona Dawg is a decent frame for its intended use. If you want to compare apples to apples, compare your team DH to a kona supreme operator which also weighs in the neighbourhood of 40-45 lbs, but uses a...

Specialized FSR, Cyclone 1900w (pics 1st page)

The devil is in the details when it comes to frame design and manufacturing. Any design that is available from any of the top bike brands can be built to be strong/stiff and light. The problem I see is that a lot of people buy cheap bikes that look similar enough to the uneducated, then...

I know everyone has their own preference, but having seen many of the ebike designs on here, I would like to chime in to say that it is important to many that the bike still look/feel like a bike. Carrying a ton of battery is fine for some, but if the thing is no fun to use or looks goofy I...

Or you can just buy that Stinky on Ebay (or Pinkbike), move all the parts to your TimmaCycle, then sell the frame on ebay to recover some $$$. I don't think enough respect is being given to the challenge of welding/heat treating aluminum. If Timma can design/build a purpose built frame one...

Timma, The frame looks great! I noticed with your norco that when you chopped the frame and reassembled it you ended up moving the frame shock mount in a manner that would effectively extend the rear suspension (and raise the bottom bracket). I can tell you from experience that raising the BB...

    Stealth Bomber

I was in whistler the week when they were filming that and I recognized it straight away. Looks better in person than the promo stuff I had seen, and when I bumped into them they were filming at a set of jumps. After hitting the jumps he would ride up hill to do another take for the camera, so...

    Best internal gear hub?

Shimano makes centerlock rotors larger than 6", and in fact the Saint freeride groupo uses centerlock rotors. I don't think it's likely that anyone will be accelerating faster than those brakes are cabable of stopping, so I'm going to venture a guess that they're more than up to the task. E

    12 kw rc motor

You only need the uC switching sequence to be ahead of the hall placement, but not necessarily for the rotation being measured. Even if the halls are physically set at '0 deg advance', retarding it by 330 deg will give 30 deg advance. I guess what I'm trying to to say is that if the sequence...

    Air Cooling my x5

Good grief man! If I was going to use emphatic language like that, I'd double check my calculations first. As you should have done. Your RPM calc is out by more than 12X! Also, if your power calculations are anything like your velocity calculations, this big power you're talking about...

    Mountain Wolf Electric Mtn Bike

That is pretty fine pitch chain on the e-drive side. Looks like a good way to get the required reduction for RC motor use. Also, insetting the motor like that could allow frame mounted halls without leaving them very exposed. The claims of range might be a bit outlandish, but a very nice...

Can Anyone Recommend A Longer-Than-Average MTB Handlebar??

Extra wide bars are the trend lately in MTB's, so I'm sure if you head to your local bike shop they'll have something in the $35 range that is 28" wide. They will at least have some 'take-offs' (lots of people use their own bars/stem/peddles even aver buying a new bike, so they'll trade the new...
