Open source BMS for 48V to 400V lithium-ion battery pack

I pulled the PCB files from your GitHub a few months ago. Was just curious to see if they were for any real calculated purpose, as I couldn't really think of a purpose for them other than potential heat dissipation

Open source BMS for 48V to 400V lithium-ion battery pack

Hey ENNOID, A question regarding your board layout for the LTC slave boards, what is the purpose of these 'islands' on the nodes of your discharge resistors? Are they there for heat dissipation somehow? They aren't exposed copper so just curious as to why they're in there on all the slave...

Open source BMS for 48V to 400V lithium-ion battery pack

Yeah please share the BOM on github for the Master and LTC6811. What can I help with for the Master? I'd be happy to give the build a try for testing if that's what you need.

Open source BMS for 48V to 400V lithium-ion battery pack

I see, thanks! Is there a bill of materials I would be able to access? Or would the materials list be contained in the schematics/PCB files?

Open source BMS for 48V to 400V lithium-ion battery pack

Hello ENNOID, Recently found this thread and I found it super interesting, thanks for your work! I just had some questions, as this system is more complex than anything I've learned about in school. Why do you use both the LTC6813 and LTC6811 chips as the slave chips? Do they serve different...

Charge one half of the battery pack, then the other half?

If the chargers are isolated, would there still be any problem connecting them to a single supply? Also, if you had two chargers, is there any benefit from connecting each of them to half a battery pack versus connecting the chargers in series and charging the whole pack? Seems like you would...

Thanks! We are looking at a few of these right now.

    High Voltage DC/DC Converter Suggestions?

Will do! We're mostly just establishing our goal priority for what needs to be on the bike versus what would be pretty cool/interesting to have on the bike. So micro-optimization is definitely a stretch goal for us. Thanks!

    High Voltage DC/DC Converter Suggestions?

The cells we're planning on using probably won't need to be actively balanced or managed on the track. To my knowledge, Lipo cells are quite good at staying balanced if they're balanced initially. Our BMS will do more monitoring than managing. We'd like to record basic parameters like...

    High Voltage DC/DC Converter Suggestions?

Sorry for the (very) late reply. Never got a notification that you had commented on this thread. If you're still interested I will link my team's website. At the moment I'm updating my team's website to include this project. The goal is to race it in New Jersey at the eMoto Varsity Challenge...

Battery Sizing for Electric Motorcycle Races?

Hello EndlessSphere, I've been pretty interested in the electric racebike scene, reading a few of Chris Jones threads, along with Ripperton, Zero, Brammo and a few varsity teams such as Team RIT or EMUS. I'm wondering how they go about calculating the battery capacity they need for a race...

    High Voltage DC/DC Converter Suggestions?

Just under 400V, about 384 V. Interesting idea, kind of like putting chargers in series/parallel then? I guess the idea is pretty similar just in reverse to supply low voltage from high voltage supplies instead of using multiple low voltage supplies to charge a high voltage pack.

    High Voltage DC/DC Converter Suggestions?

Hello there! Just wondering if you have any recommendations for high voltage DC/DC converters. Looking to step down ~400V to 12V if possible to power some smaller electronics for my electric motorcycle design. Power consumption shouldn't be too heavy, I highly doubt it'll exceed 200W, but most...

    DIY BMS monitoring chip options?

I'm weighing options at the moment, but the multi-charger setup you suggested seems the idea to learn towards. The cost wouldn't be as high and I can also shift the complexity away from the bike so that's always a good thing. I'll post my progress here after choosing some chargers and building...

    DIY BMS monitoring chip options?

Something along these lines? If I've made any wrong assumptions about the balancing current direction then please correct me. I'm assuming the chargers are acting as if they're in" series" so the total current through the pack is the same but each charger may just be providing a different amount...

    DIY BMS monitoring chip options?

Thanks for the recommendation! I'll take a look into it. By hacking together lower voltage chargers, would that mean putting the chargers in series to boost voltage somehow? Or did you mean to charge the battery in sections of ~48V, but charging all sections at the same time to try and...

    DIY BMS monitoring chip options?

Ah, I see. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll keep that in mind. At the moment this project is going to take up most of the scarce funding given by my university (student team trying to design this bike), so we have more manpower than money at the moment. I would like to consider all options...

    DIY BMS monitoring chip options?

I thought that the LTC 6802-2 were able to be daisy chained? Or do you mean that they are just difficult to interface/program if they are daisy chained? I only have a single >100V charger, so I was thinking that I would make a relay switching system to convert the higher voltage to a lower one...

    DIY BMS monitoring chip options?

Hello EndlessSphere, I'm building a BMS to monitor a ~400V battery pack for an electric motorcycle, which would be broken into 4 packs of ~100V each, with about 20-24S in each of the 4 packs. At the moment I'm considering using LTC6802-2 cell monitoring chips and using 2 on each pack to monitor...

Quick Question About Ordering/Testing New Cells!

Hello there! I've been wanting to make a new, more professional looking battery pack for an electric motorcycle and I was wondering how everyone goes about sorting weak cells from the group. I've read through a lot of DrkAngel's posts about testing used cells, but I'm wondering if new cells...
