    most effiecient motor

Since you listed inexpensive as one of your criteria perhaps this motor might work for you. http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=7870&Product_Name=TGY_AerodriveXp_SK_Series_63-74_170Kv_/_3250W

    My non hub build

An analog ammeter isn't going to care about voltage, all it cares about is how many electrons are going through the shunt in a given length of time.

Mounting Gearbox & Motor Aluminum Frame - Weld? Bond?

To me it would depend on the bike I'm putting the drive on.. If you feel it's your ultimate bike, the one you plan on keeping for a good while, go ahead and have it welded, that can be made to look the nicest with the least effort. A bike worth trading later, do some kind of semi permanent...

Motor testing without a dyno.. or even a tach..

John, Keep in mind that the waveform is very harmonic rich, in fact when I looked at it with SpectrumLab the first harmonic is actually several dB louder than the fundamental frequency.. Which means you should start with a low frequency and sweep up until you get a beat with the prop sound.

Energy density for SLA, Li and Gasoline

The motor and drive train in an EV weigh less and are more compact than an equivalent ICE, this leaves more weight proportionally for batteries in the vehicle than fuel in the ICE. Not sure how much effect his has, but it wouldn't surprise me to see it add another 20% or so range.

    Tostino's Custom BMC build

Nice shade-tree build.. Ingenious.. How's your hill climbing ability? What gears did you end up using under power?

    Mongoose DX project

My avatar is my project, a BikeE recumbent. I'm doing a power unit to pull the bottom chain run and then a freewheel on the crank so I can use all my gears (my bike has a seven speed derailleur and a three speed hub, all the gears are in the rear). I'm probably going to send the 10T back, I've...

Motor testing without a dyno.. or even a tach..

Now that *is* a good idea.. I definitely like that. My cell takes voice notes, that would be more than adequate to record the audio from the spokes.. If you were to use a digital video cam you could vid the wattmeter at the same time and get some really comprehensive numbers.. Speed...

    Demographics?

Fifty eight, married, one kid, three grandkids. I'm basically a professional JOAT (jack of all trades) but my primary expertise is troubleshooting and repairing high powered electromechanical equipment, mostly stuff that the manufacturer has gone out of business and for which parts are not...

    .

If the tires are imported (almost a certainty), the very weak dollar probably has more to do with the price increase than carbon black.. IMHO.

    Mongoose DX project

I just got one of those TowerPro 10t motors and measured the constants.. Kv = 220 Io = 1.33A Rm= .068 ohm The Io seems to vary quite a bit, I'm thinking the bearings might be dragging intermittently. The value I gave is the lowest one I recorded.

Motor testing without a dyno.. or even a tach..

I hadn't thought of that, TD, you just need to make sure that the sound you are using to measure rpm is the loudest one by a fair bit. It also helps if the sound is the lowest frequency among the sounds the mic picks up. Milk jug material works pretty well for shade tree guitar picks, I don't...

Motor testing without a dyno.. or even a tach..

So.. I got my brushless motor the other day and wanted to confirm the rather vague motor constants provided by the seller. The way I go about motor testing is to use two different propellers on the motor, measure the voltage, current and rpm with each propeller at full throttle as well as a no...

drop in top speed due to cold?

Others have already mentioned the battery voltage dropping with decreasing temps. Another thing that has a surprising effect on top speed is increased air density at colder temperatures. This is the reason that people who keep gas logs for their cars find they get better mileage in the summer...

    "Open source" motor?

You're right about inventive members, Jeremy.. I found a PM rotor for Delco alternators. http://www.windbluepower.com/product_p/pma-rot.htm

    "Open source" motor?

I pulled apart an old PC power supply and found a nice toroid that would be just the right size to take slices off to make cores.. 1.3 inches OD x 0.625 ID x 0.450 thick.. I have several old supplies in my junk room that should yield toroids of the same or similar size. The first coils I make...

    "Open source" motor?

Jeremy, Here is a thread about converting an alternator into a brushless motor.. I do believe someone posted a link to a controller specifically made to energize the rotor as well as commutating the stator windings although I don't have time to look through the thread again at the moment. I...

    "Open source" motor?

After drawing it out I now understand why 24 magnets and 18 coils works. Take a look at the pic below, the circles are the 24 magnets with N and S poles alternating while the wedge shapes represent the 18 coils with the three phases three different colors. Note how each color wedge has the same...

Peak Efficiency: An internet database for motor performance

I just found this site for RC brushless motor performance numbers, it has a database with a large number of RC brushless motors and a calculator for determining motor constants from measured data as well as a graphing function to show you the efficiency, power and rpms over a range of currents...

    "Open source" motor?

I'm about to order some magnets for a proof of concept motor, I'm going to get 50 1/2 dia x 1/16 round magnets, I already have all the materials I need for the rest of the motor save for the wire.. I'm going to trim the sides of the round magnets a bit so as to make the magnetic field more...
