    ebikessf crystalyte H40's?

That's right. Crystalyte should just specify amount of turns rather than using speeds relative to voltage, like they did with older motors -5303,5403, etc... When 35mm hubs first came out a couple of years ago, this new branding scheme also caused a lot of confusion. That's why we decided to...

    Controller input (brake)

Tektro came out with a line of hydraulic ebrakes this year: http://tektro.com/_english/01_products/00_bikeslist.php?pid=2 E-comp has same brake pad size as Avid BB5/7 and fits BMC/MAC hubs but not bigger hubs like rear crystalyte H series. E-sub has smaller brake pads and should work fine...

Is BMC V4 really more efficient than V2?

I was curious and compared latest V2T (with V4 clutch and doubled phase wires) and V4T side by side, ran only a few tests, wouldn't say my testing was thorough, because not all planned tests were completed (different amps, load, rpm, etc...), but according to the data I was able to collect...

BMC front motor, Crystalyte 12FET analog controller and 14S 10Ah lipo built in frame - the aluminum plate acts as harness and heatsink for controller so it doesn't overheat being enclosed in frame bag.

    BMC 50A controller & 1000W V3 motor

Finally got error codes from BMC (red LED on controller PCB): 1. Continuously ON: Everything is normal 2. To glitter twice: Braking issue 3. To glitter three times: open circuit or wrong component value between Sense Resistor and LM358 4. To glitter four times: issue of mosfets at low...

Planetary drive IN the crank gear??!!

As already mentioned above, Schlumpf high speed drive with 2.5X overdrive is great for higher speed ebikes. For anyone interested in getting one, be aware that special tools are required for installation as explained in this video: 0teCnQJskgQ

Geared hub motors: BMC vs MAC Shanghai

Gears are rarely a problem, it sounds like a separated V2 clutch: http://ebikessf.com/V2-vs-V3-clutch It can be fixed by welding two pieces together - very carefully though, to avoid overheating. Something I can do for $20. Or new V3 one-piece clutch and gears is $110. ilia

Low Voltage protection & other newbie questions

Another option is to go with geared hub motor and wide voltage range controller. Geared hubs are more expensive than direct drives but have more power to weight ratio, and they freewheel - if you run out of juice or break down, you can still pedal without drag created by motor magnets. For...

    Hub motor spokes

After my spoke supplier forgot to ship my order again, I finally decided to get my own Phil Wood spoke cutting machine with 15 to 12 gauge thread rollers, so hard to find 13/14, 13 and 12 ga spokes will no longer be an issue, I'm excited. Anyways, in process I learned that Phil Wood spokes...

Dahon Mu SL + ebikes eZee kit + ping 48V 10Ah

Thank you for great review! LiPO may work good as an auxilary baterry pack, less cycle life than LiFePO4 but better capacity/weight/C ratio.

Using amp/speed limiting to calibrate CA

I know this doesn't help if only one CA (to be calibrated) is available, but I use factory calibrated CA-SA to calibrate CA-DPs to the controller's shunt: 1. Connect both DP and SA to battery/controller 2. Set Rshunt on DP to 1.000 3. Reset both CAs so they show 0.000 Ah 4. Lift up a motorized...

    Hub motor spokes

Nice wheel! I really like Wheelsmith DH13 spokes, they're 13ga at the shoulder, and 14ga on threaded end. I haven't seen one brake yet on wheels I built with BMC hubs. Sapim also makes similar very good quality 13/14ga spokes.

BMC 50A controller 'no arc' and 'CA-DP support' modification

This topic may interest BMC 50A controller owners. These controllers are known generate big electric arc at power on caused by inrush current to charge five large capacitors inside controller. The video shows how to split caps from the rest of the circuitry so they remain charged after...

Geared hub motors: BMC vs MAC Shanghai

cell_man, you're right, my apologies, this was simply wrong, all I can say in my defense is it was unintentional. I removed this comment and added new photo showing MAC and BMC actually weight amost the same (all other facts are true though). My intention was not to demote MAC motors but...

Geared hub motors: BMC vs MAC Shanghai

I've been using BMC geared hub motors for about three years on most custom built ebikes, also been selling (and still am) ebike conversion kits with BMC V2 and V3 motors. I really like geared hubs for their high performance, light weight, small size / stealth, and freewheeling. I am asked a lot...

front wheel hub vs Rear wheel hub motor

I generally prefer rear vs. front hub motors, especially for 500 Watts + motors. My view: Front hub pros: - better front to rear weight distribution - allows to have rear gearing system unchanged, big plus for bikes with rear internal gear hubs - will not pop wheelies on sudden acceleration...

BMC modified Specialized Crossroads Hybrid 75v lipo 15amp

Tom, nice looking bike! Thanks for sharing. Your V2S motor is a new 2010 model with V3 clutch that can take a lot more beating then the V2 clutch - here are pics demonstrating differences between the two clutches: V2S motor in 700C rim has about the same torque and top speed as V3 motor in...

    Hub motor spokes

I serviced a few bikes for local customers purchased from hp-cycles and noticed that they use cross 2 spoke pattern on their 26" wheels. Also, noticed their wheel builds are not very high quality. Cross 2 is ok for 700c rims but on 26" it causes too much angle at the nipple. I suggest relacing...

    BMC 50A controller & 1000W V3 motor

Great ideas and testing info! However, the weakest link of the motor remains freewheel/clutch assembly. 30-33A is maximum it can handle at low speeds (under ~ 7mph). Going over 35A, especially up steeper hills, will eventually result in bent axles on green gears or stripped one way bearing.
