    Your Whours for kms

Mixed riding, hills and flat, motor stops supplying power above 25km/hr - around 7.7 Wh/km for the Greenspeed Magnum Big Wheel trike in the signature, with a Shengyi SX2 fast-wind mounted as a mid-drive with a 26T sprocket on the motor driving a 48T sprocket on the rear wheel. Per Australian...

Why touchscreens are in every new car

Putting the controls through a screen means it can be hacked. Can we build such a system that is more difficult to hack? Or course, but so what? Manufacturers will not do that - it's not something they are rewarded for doing (or punished for not doing - yet). The control system must be...

Drilling 1/2" holes in Bafang cranks to reduce weight

There is an element of 'magical thinking' in this, in the sense that you look at the part and think that it is homogeneous, evenly and perfectly composed, and also that your own changes are the same. It probably isn't - it's just as likely to have unresolved stresses and unevenly mixed...

UK gov' consultation to allow higher power ebikes and throttles

Power from an electric motor is partly a function of speed (=torque x rpm). I want power to get heavy loads up hill. Safety can be addressed by mandated speed limiters - power is not relevant. Illegal changes to controllers are exactly that - illegal. I've read another post recently about (I...

When is a Watt, not a Watt... and Other Stupid Questions.

Hey AW, my understanding is power delivery permits a speed - that is, if the motor doesn't dole out the power needed to match a given friction+air resistance+geometric gravity input I won't maintain that speed. But torque permits an acceleration. Or not.

Best way to lace a larger diameter direct drive hub motor for the most reliability?

Speaking of non-sequiters, my mind persists in attempting to envision AW racing on his trike in this accessorized with n+1 enormous dogs. I would probably get out of the way.

For those who insist on fat tires (i.e. 3.8" or wider) with hub motor what pedal drive train would you use?

My point is that the existing design makes choices for you. That chain must clear the tire in any chainline it may assume. The range of chainlines that result from a cassette or freewheel dictate a distance the front sprocket must exceed to prevent the chain from rubbing on the tire. A single...

short circuiting motor phases via automotive relay and RF remote for safety

My security is a 'Sold Secure Diamond' U-lock and a cable to reach the front wheels to slow them down, but I'd like opinions on an idea. I've identified a switch into the controller on my trike which sets the motor to reverse. I am working out a switch and location - my idea is I can reach the...

Definitive Tests on the Heating and Cooling of Hub Motors

I don't put my 'gears' inside the motor. For most traditional bike designs, and with this mounting, the motor is coupled to the rim - 'hub motor'. I use a hub motor, but mine is decoupled from the rim which permits me to introduce my own 'gears' - a reduction. I have seen other schemes to do...

How do u run a 350w hub at 500 or more watts(anyone who has commented on this thread please read the newest post to gain a better perspective)

You are asking questions, so you are somewhat open to hearing information. The pictures you show suggest you are keeping your scooter where you sleep. You are also playing fast and loose with the lithium cells in your batteries. It is possible you will accidentally not push the cells outside...

E-bike build Overvolting dd hub motor

is this what others call 'field weakening'? If so, people will know they are the same subject when searching. I hadn't myself heard the term 'flux weakening' before (so I might learn something too).

    Ebike for my mom

A minor detail. If you buy a bicycle with a proprietary battery form factor, you should hope they are still sold in 3-5 years. I know of someone that burned out his battery in one year. Batteries are expensive, and batteries you can't replace will cost you an entire electric bicycle.

    Please recommend me parts

A properly designed and built motor will not require any maintenance - and there are many such motors for sale. A motor that is badly treated, just like a bicycle that is badly treated, will be damaged and require repair or replacement. Maintenance isn't really a part of any electric bicycle...

    Please recommend me parts

I replied in light of OP's criteria, but I agree with your mention of context, including legal context. Spending money on a motor that is illegal or unusable in your jurisdiction is a waste. The usability issues are separate, but Grin now certifies their motor as 250W compliant, and support...
