Is the semi solid state claims from Chinese batteries true?

I'm doing some research for a new battery build where I aim to increase the energy density compared to my old builds (30Q & VTC6). The obvious route (at least for me) is to look into cells as Samsung 35E to push the number towards 240 Wh/kg @ 3A.

I can't find any 21700 cells that would go over 240 Wh/kg, or 18650 for that matter. Perhaps I'm missing some?

But then I found these:

Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology - (Semi?) Solid State ~248 Wh/kg. Link: http://www.solidstatelion.com/en/product_page/294.html

Foxtech - Diamond Semi Solid State 251.7 Wh/kg. Link:

Grepow - Tattu NMC 811 (pouch) 275 Wh/kg . Link:

They all claim to have up to double the cycles compared to regular li-ion technology (600+), better temperature performance, higher energy density, higher discharge rate & charge rate.

This is news to me. Seems like WeLion is the real deal at least, supporting cells to NIO: https://cnevpost.com/2021/11/26/nio...ortedly-to-get-investment-from-xiaomi-huawei/

If this is true, I feel like many builds based on cylindrical cells is kind of obsolete when the spec/price is compared. Is there anyone here who has tested one of these packs? Could they really be that good? My project is 12S with 140A peak demand for a drone, so these semi solid state packs seems like the best route as energy density, temperature and cycle life is the crucial parameters.

Btw, what the heck is semi solid state? The internet seems a bit dry on info about this technology..

Good sleuthing. I tried writing all four contact addresses which I found on the website (cdai@welion.cn, info@welion.cn, job@solidstatelion.com, info@solidstatelion.com) and every one of them bounced. I eventually got through on the phone and got an email address which didn't bounce, fyou@welion.cn. She responded right away, I'll report back if I get any real details.

There's an additional page at http://www.welion.tech/en, which seems to have more of their product line.

Just bumping this fairly old topic to see if you ever made any progress?

Nope. Now the Molicel P30B exists and meets all my needs, so I haven't looked into the WeLion anymore at all.
I see, fair enough. Yea these 'semi-solid state' cells don't seem to be currently exceeding Li-Ion by much (I had used Samsung INR21700-50E for my project a while back, which are at around 260wh/kg) - but with the safety aspect as well as the cycle life increase they are certainly interesting.

Here is some more info on 'NMC 811' cells from Grepow: Product Details

You can find cells claiming similar/greater energy density on AliBaba (High Energy Density 340wh/kg Hv 4.45v Solid-state Single Cell 32000mah 35000mah 36000mah 66000mah 78000mah Battery Batteries - Buy Custom Single Cell 4.45v 3.95v,High Energy Density 340wh/kg,Lihv Solid State Battery Product on Alibaba.com) but it's hard to know much about these cells...

(edit: Reading that 'NMC811/NCM811' can have it's problems, especially charging to the higher claimed voltages, which is where they get their capacities)

I did drop Grepow an email to ask if they had an official supplier for smaller numbers.

Any luck yet? I'm glad to see that the quest is still alive. Foxtech listed the HV series which seems to have the same cell you linked to at Alibaba. 15C is a bold claim! I wonder how far they're pushing the limits of the chemistry with these numbers and if anyone have done some tests to verify.. https://www.foxtechfpv.com/foxtech-diamond-6s-22000mah-semi-solid-state-li-ion-battery.html
