Motor-based inverter?

I just got a travel trailer that I am going to be living in for the next few years as a travelling engineering trainee. The trailer has a 12v system and battery bank but no inverter. I was thinking it'd be neat to have an inverter that could run the microwave, some power tools, etc. I also have a cordless drill with a charger that requires pure sine wave, and those inverters are pricey. I had an idea to couple a 12v motor and a 110v motor (operating as a generator) as a pure sine wave inverter. I am guessing this would be less efficient, bulky, and a finger hazard. Has anyone seen something like this? Any guesses on efficiency? I think it'd be sufficient for very short intermittent loads- popping popcorn for 2.5 minutes, running a circular saw for a 20 second cut every few minutes. What do you all think?
