Easiest, most reliable bolt on mid drive kit?

Running 1500-2500w through a bicycle chainline is the opposite of reliable, much less bulletproof. You will either need a very heavy chainline or a hub motor.

Build Help - Commuter (10Mi RT) For GF. (Update: Now for me)

Unless the OP thinks they are only going to use it for a week or two and give up on it, yes a good battery better: lighter, more reliable and cheaper than a cheap heavy battery you have to replace all the time.

First electric bike journey with the wife.

I ride with the wife regularly (mostly on local trails) on our KMX trikes. It's been one of our favorite passtimes these past few years, and just keeps getting better.

    eBike for Tall Guy

I'm with otherDoc, a kmx with nice fat tires and a 500w+ middrive or big hub in the back would make a great beach ride, and as a bonus you have your own comfy chair built in.

Dual pull brake lever with switch for Trike

If that doesn't work you might need to use a standard switched brake and a dual pull adapter.

    Which battery do I need?

If your budget is up to it, a 20 amp hour ping battery would give you the speeds you want and about a 30 mile range for about 15-20# of weight. 36v will get you ~20 mph according to http://www.ebikes.ca/simulator/ and 48v ~25mph. The simulator is pretty good at estimating speed, range etc. The...

    500w cyclone

The 650-1200w cyclone is a different (if closely related) animal because it's built for an external rather than internal controller. I know there have been a few people here who have bypassed/removed the internal controllers. A good place to start would be...

Bionx vs others in "feel" of the riding

Most bikes/systems that claim to have a torque sensor actually just use a cadence sensor that just counts revolutions at the bottom bracket. Other than Bionx there are a few european and asian brands that use panasonic/bosch systems with torque sensors (as I understand it) or if you're looking...

where to find cheap and good 36v 20ah battery pack???

Did anyone mention that rc batteries can catch fire if you abuse them? I'm not trying to scare anyone off, just pointing out that they are not as plug and play as LiFePO4. If you don't mind the extra work, there's a reason so many people here use them. SK

    Ebikes for Short People?

My girlfriend has a 26.5"inseam, and we had no luck finding her a prebuilt bike that she liked. I converted an extra small trek 3500 (13") and that was ok. We didn't get a really good fit until we switched to recumbent trikes. Your best bet is either to try a folder or find the right bike and...

Advice for a LWB recumbent mid-drive?

My cyclone doesn't have many hours /miles on it. We pulled it off my girlfriend's bike because of mounting issues. When I have time it will go on my kmx because I already paid for it. Based on it's reputation I plan to run it at 24v which should get me close to 30mph in theory. If I end up...

Advice for a LWB recumbent mid-drive?

If you go cyclone it won't be quiet, but their heavy duty double freewheel mount doesn't suck like the regular bike mounts do (at least on my square tubed kmx) on round tubes I have no idea. That kind of power will eat chains though, I'd almost suggest carrying an extra in your bag. As for...

    Henry111's free tech support thread

I think the first two distributors you'll hear about here for LiFePO4 would be ping http://www.pingbattery.com/servlet/StoreFront for basic 2c packs or CellMan http://www.emissions-free.com/catalog/c1_p1.html for high discharge packs (A123). They aren't the only good suppliers, but many here...

Are low voltage controller more effecient?

Grin (ebikes.ca) offer infineon 20a and 35a controllers set up for 24-48v nominal. I can't say whether it helps the efficiency, but they're a very reputable source. -SK

    Winkinatcha's progressive Kit Mod thread

I'm experimenting with a 24/48v build that runs ~30km/h at 24v and I expect ~50km/h at 48v. My solution was to use a controller that handles 19-60v along with a cycle analyst (eventually) with 2 A123 packs. It's not light at around 7-8kg for batteries and the same for the motor, but with one in...

If I have the following, do I need anything else for Ebike?

You can get a fuse and fuse holder at your local auto parts store or radio shack. Same for an on/off switch. Ebrake levers are fairly cheap on the net. BMS depends on the batteries you run, if you're just running lead I don't know how necessary it is, but hopefully someone else will chime in...

If I have the following, do I need anything else for Ebike?

The one thing I see missing is a safety cutout. Ebrakes, an on/off switch on the handlebars, or a jumper with a pull loop are great things if something shorts and the motor wants to run away.

Noob discoveries: what happens when u run 6s,12s,18s, and 24

That makes me think a controller (or some other device) that would switch on the fly between say 18v/36v/72v with 4 18v battery packs would be much better off the line then a 72v straight. Am I missing something? -SK

cyclone heavy duty dual freewheel mount questions

Has anyone used the cyclone dual freewheel mount (not to be confused with the dual freewheel motor/gearbox)? It looks slick, but having it in hand I can't figure out what holds it against the frame so it doesn't pull toward the chainline. I will be mounting it on a kmx x-class, so basically...

NuVinci Harmony and Gates carbon drive

I know the subject came up in the cheap nuvinci developer's kit thread. I think it was determined that a CA could do that with a developer's kit, but if you want to run the throttle through it you need a 2nd CA.

Bike stopped working, what to check first?

I'm taking those baby steps into real ebikes, the off the shelf bikes were good to me, but even the girlfriend is eying 48v and a hard to find 12" full suspension frame. :D We'll figure out all the quirks of the bike as we go. -SK

Bike stopped working, what to check first?

Turned out to be simpler than that even. I rigged up a lead acid battery and it worked. Turned out my crimped on connection to the ping battery came loose under the electrical tape. Off to the store for some heat shrink and flux. -SK

Bike stopped working, what to check first?

I have a clyte hs3540 & infineon 35a controller from grin (full kit -CA wanted to wait for v3 to go final) and a ping 24v30ah battery. I charge the battery after every use, and both are basically new (maybe 6-8 rides, mostly around 5-10 miles ea.) I charged up before the first, and after each...
