Can I reverse the chainring on BBS02 for positive offset?

Hi all, I'm working on a custom build (recumbent trike style) which has a standard width (68mm PF30) bottom bracket at the front, and a 170mm fatbike axle at the rear. This is being powered by a BBS02 middrive motor. I need to ensure the chain clears the rear wheel with a nice direct...

Max kingpin inclination on recumbent with fat wheels

Hi all, I'm currently designing the steering knuckles for a recumbent with 20" fat wheels. The hubs are 150mm (no dishing - i.e. tyre in center). The outside tire is 550mm diameter (around 21.6"). To get center-point steering with no scrub, I need an inclination of around 20 degrees. I've...

Left and right handed disc calipers on recumbent trikes?

RE: Ebay. Unfortunately I'm not in the US :(

Left and right handed disc calipers on recumbent trikes?

Thanks everyone, some great info there. Chalo, Wheazel - did you notice any difference in braking between the two wheels (i.e. brake steer) with the calipers not being in the same place on each wheel? I think I'll end up going for mirrored calipers if I can find them.

Left and right handed disc calipers on recumbent trikes?

Hi all, How are the front disc brakes on the right and left sides of recumbent trikes designed? Presumably both sides need to be mounted so that they contact the disc in the same place (e.g. The right side can't be mounted at the top of the disc, and the left at the bottom). Are calipers...

    My Velo Pedal Car Prototype

Cool. Didn't think you'd go to all that trouble of fabricating without designing the steering :) Just checking! Enjoy your vacation!

What size is the ELF frame tubing?

Haha! Looks a bit like one. Nope, pulling moulds of a CNC milled plug (hand finished), then carbon fibre body shell for stiffness.

    My Velo Pedal Car Prototype

nerdalert - correct me if I'm wrong, but from the photos and vid of your ride, it doesn't look like you've followed 'normal' principles of steering design, including taking scrub radius in to account? It looks like your stub axles are connected directly to the upright at 90 degrees to the...

    My Velo Pedal Car Prototype

One thing (of many) I don't have in my shop (yet) - a lathe. Looks great! And yep, energy conservation is not what I'm going for with those wheels :) They're about 50/50 looks and comfort - they are the only suspension. Also, I don't like the way that large vehicles (larger than a bicycle, I...

To mid drive or not to mid drive

Sannder - I have the same experience as you. I built my BBS02 750W mid drive about 6 months ago. I'll preface this by saying I haven't tried programming it yet, and I know you can do so to get different characteristics, but - Like you've noticed, the motor (using cadence sensor) is on/off' and...

Ah - I think I got what your after. I'll post anything else I see that might be relevant. Just got word my wheels are shipping! I'm pretty excited :)

    My Velo Pedal Car Prototype

Not sure exactly what style you're going for, Nerdalert, but here's another 'bare bones' sort of design to get ideas off. Google images: bee recumbent trike The vehicle also has quite a few cool ideas for storage etc that could be adapted: YouTube video

    My Velo Pedal Car Prototype

Very sorry, Toecutter, but I agree with nerdalert. That ride is not the prettiest vehicle I've ever seen! Nerdalert, as far as I know the ELF doesn't have a floor or doors? :) I think doors might be an optional extra.

    My Velo Pedal Car Prototype

Looks like tons of fun :) That has a ton of acceleration. 72v would have you pulling wheel spins! Question: why did you build all that camber into your front wheels? Almost all the reading I've done so far in to recumbent trikes keeps the wheels as vertical as possible, or perhaps a tiny bit of...

    My Velo Pedal Car Prototype

That sounds awesome! I have a home-made electric scooter (the one in my profile pic) with 48v 1000W hub motor that looks similar to yours. 20" wheel. We have a steep hill here I tested it on and it easily does 30km/h (18mph) without a problem. It doesn't have pedals. Your hill must have been...

What size is the ELF frame tubing?

Yeah, as drunkskunk says, they use 6061 T6. Real difficulty finding anyone that stocks it here (New Zealand) and mill runs need to be at least 200kg per size, so not feasible. I'll likely end up using 6060 T6 which is less strong, but still up to the task, especially as the frame will be over...

What size is the ELF frame tubing?

Yep - exactly what I'm doing. I wouldn't say "similar to an ELF though" :) Mine will be an electric assisted trike, but that's about where the similarity ends! I'm also a way in to mine. Have parts coming by boat from China, and currently working on the plug. Getting the body shell made in...

Project: Home made velomobile design with crank or mid motor

That sounds like a blast! I have a 750W middrive bafang BBS02 on my upright commuting bike. It can hit 50km/h even with the trailer :) But I guess the velo is a bit heavier! I think I have a 42 tooth chainring, and I have a Nexus 8 rear hub.

Project: Home made velomobile design with crank or mid motor

How are you powering your auxiliaries, like your fan? Have you got a DC-DC converter coming off the main battery, or a separate powerpack? And was there a reason you sawed right through a triangle brace to put in your outlets

Just built my first ebike! What should I upgrade first?

Great ride! I know the feeling of that smile :) After getting a flat at 40km/h (harrowing!) I now use thorn-proof inner tubes. They're heavier, so probably not as good for performance, but I value my skin :) That was my first upgrade. My next, especially for commuting, was panniers and a light...
