Dave's 80:1 RC mid drive kit build log

Did anyone ever modify Daves Gen2 waterjacket design with steel gears to the proper profile? I have access to a CNC mill and lathe now. Was thinking of stripping down the tangent and reworking the profile. I notice notching on the outer housing. Gears themselves seem plenty hard.

    Street legal Cafe Racer build.

Fuse would need to see 1000A for 60s. Not sure where you're going to be able to hold a throttle open that long and I'm doubtful the qs180 wouldn't become the fuse in that scenario. This is to say an EV fuse would likely never be tripped by your use case even at 500A rating, while tripping...

    Street legal Cafe Racer build.

Very nice machine work. That fuse is absolutely massive. Thought these are neat and compact. I'm building a pack with 650 amp burst and a QS180 so I went a little lower than the 500A option. 16ka interrupt so should be suitable unless I'm missing something. I think a belt drive is the logical...

Soft bodied pouch cells. Too much electrolyte?

I think this may be part of the issue with the 4 wire tester I have. Likely can't load the cell enough to get a good reading on it. Seems to fluctuate or perhaps I am just splitting hairs. I should tear a space heater apart and put a good load on the cell. At least a few hundred watts.

Soft bodied pouch cells. Too much electrolyte?

Regarding Ri measurement devices. I find it difficult even with the 1035+ to get a wholly consistent number in the milliohm range. Noticed that it seems like after the devices runs for a time it will drift upward slightly. Likely from the heat associated with using it. I think I am going to use...

Soft bodied pouch cells. Too much electrolyte?

Thanks AW. Kicker here is my 1035+ doesn't show anything suspicious when looking at OCV or resistance. Tested capacity is slightly lower on the softer cells, about 1% less the mean of all cells. Capacity RSD is .56% and OCV RSD is .015% which I feel is good. That said load testing is the only...

Soft bodied pouch cells. Too much electrolyte?

As the title says what causes a soft or 'loose' pouch cell? These are new cells that I suspect are OEM rejects. Some minor foil damage here and there as expected but something that caught me off guard is soft pouches were the jelly roll is not rigid. There doesn't seem to be any puffing at all...

    VESC STR-500 100V 500A Launched

Interested in this controller as well. It's a little light on the voltage for my application but it seems very well thought out. This or Tronics larger controller whenever it gets released. 3Shul just seems a little slap and dash for my liking.

    Yamaha YZ250F

After seeing the somewhat poor craftsmanship on it's exterior I'm not so sure I would be happy seeing it's internals for the price he's asking. I have got in contact with him but his date to follow up has been left with no response like you menetion. I'm thinking a different controller might be...

    Suzuki DR650 40kW mid conversion

I figured it's time for another update (Let me be honest - I have hidden a question in here for the more experienced...) The cell count has been modified. While the initial plan was to go with a 30S2P pack, physical restrictions and factors such as wind resistance and symmetry between both pack...

    Suzuki DR650 40kW mid conversion

Hackey said improvements of some kind. Specifically I had asked about buying stateside from alienrides. Perhaps he just wants all the profit but we'll see in another week or two. Regarding backpurge in stainless. For openroot sure but I don't think it's needed for this application. I've...

    Suzuki DR650 40kW mid conversion

As the more seasoned builders know analysis paralysis is a real time killer. That said the bike hasn't stalled out as much has been accomplished in my understanding of several of the larger hurdles. Let's see where we are now. The less than standard m12-1.5mm bolts have been ordered. It seems I...

TIG torch for battery spot welding

Any updates on this project or is it dead dead? I have a tig setup that's appropriate for micropulse use but I'm not sure if this will work for pouch cell tabs... Regardless I'm interested to know where the development on the torch ended up. I've seen people spot welding with the blunt end of...

    Suzuki RMZ 250 EV Restomod

Gosh that factor phase wire crimp doesnt have me holding high hopes for whatever is going on inside my qs180... They lathered the end caps in silicone too. Not looking forward to opening it at all. In regards to the vent of only put one. I don't really think it's nessecary but since you have them...

    wr250f conversion

The goal for the bushpig is to be a legally converted runaround bike. No offroad beyond graveI/fire roads. I would like the bike to be able to do a reasonable distance on the highway as well. Being able to commute or get anywhere I need in the warmer seasons is a big plus for this project...

    Suzuki DR650 40kW mid conversion

I was likely thinking in hp when I wrote 80kW. I started by speccing the battery to be capable of twice the ICE output figuring whatever results from that will be fast enough. Running the system at 40-45kW would still net me a gain over the ICE version as well as keeping the batteries happy by...

    Potential of QS 180 90H

I'm looking to build similar to you here with a QS180. Only just started so I can't give you any insight into peak power. I was looking at the fardriver you mentioned but presently I'm leaning towards the cl1000 3shul after seeing the price for the fardriver.

    Suzuki DR650 40kW mid conversion

Here is where we are starting from. If it wasn't for a gracious friend and their loaning of time and space this project would still be on the back burner. You can see the cardboard aided QS180 sitting in the frame in the second photo. It looks like the chain line won't be an issue. Perhaps a...

    wr250f conversion

Enjoyed reading through your build Doug. I'm looking to convert a DR650 with the qs180 motor. Safe to say you're still happy with your controller choice? I was a little worried earlier in the thread when the rubber banding/ossilating throttle was being discussed. That's something that would...

    Suzuki DR650 40kW mid conversion

Hey all and welcome to the build thread for my post '96 DR650. This conversion has been an idea in my head for almost as long as I have owned the bike. I told myself that when the engine gives out the bike will get a new life in the form of a conversion. Progress thus far has consisted of...

    crf450r 45kw race bike build

Man what a build! This thread is definitely inspiring and has me questioning a few things about my build. Specifically the importance of CS placement relative to the stock location and the viability of pouch cells. Much to think about. Thanks for the inspo and I hope it rides as well as it looks!

3300 for all of that? That's a steal.

Dave's 80:1 RC mid drive kit build log

Dave was always helpful and I still have a running tangent Gen2 with the waterjacket and I believe steel gears. I don't ride it as hard as I use to. What I'd really like is to get a torque sensing BB and pair the kit with a smaller battery. No longer do I need to test the limits of this kit. It...

Do you know the large carrier bearing number for the gen1?

Dave's 80:1 RC mid drive kit build log

That's an odd issue. I'm guessing you have one of the units with the stator built into the housing of the tangent? Must be a short/issue there. Not sure what could be done as I assume the stator was glued into place by Dave. Daves support was great while he was around, alas he had to get back...
