I've never assembled or used one of these pocket spot-welders before. They seem easy enough to use, so I purchased the parts kit. Whatever I learn, I will post here in order to speed the process for others.

This is a "low voltage / high amp-current" spot-welder. The power source is either a large 12V car battery, or an old LiPo battery pack, assembled to 3S, or a bank of large audio capacitors which are topped-off by a small power supply, I have even seen a 12V battery coupled with large capacitors. This device will eventually cost roughly $100 in parts, and will provide:

1) dual pulse, with adjustable timing for either pulse (first pulse burns off oxidation, second pulse is longer and performs the actual welding)
2) triggered by a foot-switch, so hands are free (not included)
3) can hold up to 8 FETs, so very high currents can be used without overheating the device (original design used 6 FETs)

Here is the information thread on these and where to buy the parts kit

Very interested in your build on this kit.

I also bought the finished unit you posted about above and am curious how long it took to get to you and how you like it.

Please keep us informed on this kit as well as then prebuilt unit you bought.
