Having bought a 5304 v3 of Edward a few weeks ago I built the wheel up. Made some dropouts and jumped on the beast. It moved half a foot and died. A phase wire shorted out all three sensors. Gutted I went to rs and bought some more. Re built the hub. Braced either side by two lots of 4mm steel dropouts extra. So 8mm a side. Jumped on it today for the first time and the cable side on the stator sheered clean off! Causing me to have a major accident. Ca shattered. Carbon sworks damaged.. The list goes on. I've built loads of normal Chinese kits for people and myself running similar power and never ever had this problem before. What do you all think? Just a bad motor or bad design? What should my next step be?
Thanks si

My first thoughts are that your torque arms are not man enough for an X5, a minimum of 12mm solid either side very well secured and very good fitting would be more like it. It sounds like you underestimated what this motor needs!

do you have any pics?

Need pics..

Yes got pics but don't know how to upload them, its a clean break. The torque arms didn't give at all though its right on where the cables come out.

Upload your pics to photobucket then drop the IMG links into your post and the pics appear!

It could have been the opposite side torque arm that allowed the spindle to rotate a little shifting all of the torque onto the one with the cutout in, they really do need to both be very good fitting and very secure on any moderately powerfull hubbie.
What does the break look like? is it clean or does some of it look like it has been fractured for while?

OK will do. Its a perfect clean break.

Yeah, I heard a few times that axles snap on the 5403 crystalytes.
Could be a bad batch :( So, find a way to get a new axle for that heavy bad boy.
Stealth Electric bikes use the very same motor on their bikes. But I think they re glue the magnets and some other stuff(cant remember what it was now). So they usually last pretty damn long on their bikes!
And that torque arm of yours, I do not see clearly but it seems like it is not 100% tight, so this could cause a snap to.

Thanks buddy. Any ideas how to go about getting it changed? They were tight as a tight thing.

Would they not exchange it? Was going to send it back. Buy another one in the mean time. So are they not splined?

bigsi, when you go to put a pic up, hover over the gear in the top right corner of the pic in Photobucket then select the "gets links" click on the IMG link, it will automatically copy then paste it into your message and the pic will appear. You are using the direct link or the HTML one.

Thanks very much buddy :)

my 4065, great motor, shit axle material!

need good solid CLAMPING t.a.s on BOTH sides. i had the same happen, got a new axle and pressed it in at the local workshop.used 2 sections of pipe, differnt diameters, to support stator at the collar and to press at the thicker shoulder of the axle, not the end to avoid bending it. carefull of sideways movement when pressing.
axle has no true splines ,but fine grooves to get a friction fit. the stator is just smooth inside.

i got my replacement axle from e-mtb in melbourn, aus, John k who makes the stealths..50AUD. kennny at clyte was hopeless. dont even bother.
ebikes ca may be some help too. there are some good utube vids for hubmotor opening proceedures....

when new stator went in it was a wisker off center first time round, so i could hear the windings rubbing on coverplate.

i then went back and pressed it in another 2 mm or so o get it right. replacement axle may have been a little different.runs fine now.

it was probably caused buy only having 1 torque arm and none too good.

good luck! :D

Well Edward wouldn't help saying xlyte wouldn't cover it so I have taken it to a local spindle company ( that's all they make) the shafts are rare as are splined too. The metal is crap steel they said. So I've opted for crank shaft grade haha. Its 10 quid more taking the total too 180 yikes! I have another firm water jetting 12mm steel for the dropouts. Price to be confirmed.... I'll upload pics once receives back.

I have used 2 Crystalyte motors for my own builds both H series in which I replaced the axles before I used them, the first I actually used an aluminium axle (in my second bike build log below) the second motor is still under construction and is having a Titanium spindle, and I also changed the bearings in both motors from 17mm I/d to 3/4" (19.05mm) mainly so when the wiring channel is cut in there is more material left. I figured this was a better way to do it than wait for it to break and take the wiring, halls and possibly fets with it!
I had an X5 too in my Stealth Bomber which had the std axle but with Stealth's torque arm design it was never a problem.

i went down that road too....asked local machine shop for quote, which sent me into a quick u-turn, packing to the hills!

i still want to gwt a decent qual axle at some stage, and perhaps get a run of them and sell them on to cover costs. i believe it would be quite a popular item. the motors are great otherwise, its the only fault i can see.

No one can get the bloody axle out? I think it needs freezing but no one can do it? What do I do next? Buy another full motor?

How did you get the axle out tench? If you're after an axle I can get a price for two?

If you ship the stator down to me I can press it out and have you a new spindle made in some tough chromium steel, you would even have the opportunity to change the design slightly to perfectly suit your frame fixings or we could make a small batch of them as they will sell, it will end up covering all your own repair cost?

I will start another thread to see how many people would be up for one!

The Titanium for my new HT3525 spindle arrived today!

Awesome buddy can you give me a bell please asap as I was about to buy another motor 07876544847. Thanks si
