Bike Friendly City?

Part of my daily afternoon commute route.

Word of a bike rider who was assaulted by an unknown pedestrian on the San Gabriel River bike path in Seal Beach earlier this month.

The perpretrator allegedly stepped onto the bike path and socked the cyclist in the face hard enough to knock him down off his bike, then proceeded to punch him severely before casually strolling away. The victim was discovered by another rider crawling up the rocky embankment leading to the river, bleeding from the face, head, arms and legs.

Disturbingly, police never even showed up in response to the 911 call, although other riders followed the attacker for over 20 minutes.

WTF?

Are you going to demand accountability of the 911 system?

Just like during the LA riots: "You're on your own."
You can at least request the recording of the call-in and then go from there.

I hope more information becomes available. A lot of homeless people camp in the river bed area. I never ride down there in the dark, too many horror stories over the years. What makes this one disturbing is that it happened during the daytime.

Opportunity to sign the petition to oppose California's mandatory helmet law. :x

Californians, don't let this happen!

You can't fix a crime problem by adding burdens to crime victims. Forcing cyclists to wear helmets because drivers kill them is just like forcing women to wear full-coverage clothing because men rape them. We know from other places that have tried both approaches that not only do these requirements promote damaging public attitudes, but they don't fix the problem at all. Men must stop raping; drivers must stop killing. If you want to make a dent in the problem, you have to start from that end.

Here in Austin decades ago, the City Council passed a mandatory helmet law for all bicyclists. Austinites being what they were at the time, not only did we give them an earful about how much we disliked the idea, but we didn't comply. On top of that, police used the new rule to do more of their customary racist harassment, exposing the city to the risk of legal action. It did not take long for the City Council to roll back the requirement to cover only cyclists 15 and under. (The cops still only use it for hassling black and brown kids.)

Law enforcement has become much bolder, more brutal and capricious, and much less willing to deal with the public as human beings since then. I don't think an Austin-style solution to a bicycle helmet law is as likely to succeed now as it was back in the 20th century. You'll have to stop this before it gets going.

We already have an under 18 years old helmet requirement that few teenagers comply with, which generally gives the cops an excuse to harass juveniles on bicycles, skateboards, and scooters at will.

Loser legislators, next you'll need a helmet to drive your car or walk down the sidewalk; kids most certainly will need them while playing on playgrounds. Tenderfoots already are forced to wear them to ride the nags at the local stable. While taking a bath or shower, bowling, golf, fishing, watching TV and on and on ad abserdium.
We just need to roll over and let someone else tell us what to do, think, say, eat, know, and buy.
Forget about having a completely juvenistic society, cylists must rise up and conquor the world.
