Hi,
I have have a plan to make own electric bike. But I cannot understand basics of geared hub motor. I cannot understand when is freewheel in geared hub motor. If pedal 20km/h and motor rotation speed is 16km/h. What will happen? Freewheel or motor helps me? And if motor speed is faster than my speed. Will I brake it or I help?

Sorry for my English. I study it once a week!
Thanks. Einars!

Hi Einars,

I'm certainly no expert, but I think I can handle this.

If you pedal your bike up to 20kph, but the motor is only able to move you to 16kph, you will freewheel. You won't break it.

If the motor is moving you along at 25kph, but you can only pedal to 20kph, you won't help the motor at all, as your just spinning your legs around without any resistance from the pedals.

Finally, if the motor is propelling you to 25kph, and your bike is geared to 30kph, you will be helping the motor.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Please put what country you are in in your profile.

Thanks. It helps me a lot!
