At about September 2019, I started on an ambitious electric ATV project (60kW, 6kWh) after my experiences with a 14kW Vector frame and an Adaptto eBike + self made LiIon battery. Now, I’ve passed the torch to my university to complete it, as I’ve shifted my focus to a more financially promising and for humanity bigger-impact-having Bitcoin programming project. Also maybe others of my university get inspired to work on electric mobility after seeing this.
Nevertheless, I thought it would be nice to document the project here.

Project Summary:

• Base Vehicle: An old Bashan Quad, originally with 4PS.
• Motor: Upgraded with a Motenergy ME1304, chosen for its high performance.
• Controller: Initially used a Mobipus 72600 FOC Sine Wave Controller, but faced signal issues with the motor signal. Considered switching to a VESC from TrampaBoards, but didn’t proceed due to my new focus and budget constraints.
• Battery Configuration: Nissan Leaf’s latest gen batteries in a 2s2p arrangement within each of the 5 metal holders, achieving a nominal 75V (3.75V per series). At 4.0V per cell, it’s 80V, and at 3.0V, it’s 60V.
• BMS: A suitable BMS is yet to be finalized, with a Batrium BMS being a potential choice.
• Custom made Motor plate as well as battery holder for the 3 battery packs on the front.
• Calculated weight distribution where a wheelie is mathematically not possible if you sit on the front a little bit as a 65kg rider.
• Theoretical acceleration from 0-100 km/h: ~3 seconds (Im assume the frame would bend before this would happen, but the electric components where made for it hahah).

Current Status:

• The project has been handed over to my university. They will address the controller issues and complete the build hopefully, as they always wanted to start an electric ATV project and I also hope to inspire some students to go into electric mobility with this (Germany heavily needs some more expertise there…)
• My involvement has ceased, as I’m now dedicated to programming in the Bitcoin space.

Funding:

• Initially funded by the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung with around €4949 + a couple of hundred Euros by myself for further material like heavy duty cables etc etc…

I’m excited to see how the university completes this electric ATV, a project that started in my 5th-floor dorm. It’s been a long journey but after so many years, I‘ve moved on to more important issues in this world. Here are some pics :)

Handing over the disassembled project to my university - I think they were a bit overwhelmed lol.

Photoshopped a lot to get the dimensions of the frame before ordering the electric components to get a feeling if they would even fit.
