Low rolling resistance and water shedding tread pattern help you keep the rubberside down on any street, road, or path, in addition to "treadguard flat protection". The Nashbar Streetwise mountain bike tire is the perfect commuter MTB tire for all situations. 26x1.5. 60 tpi. black. wire bead w/treadguard..

Use slime oversized 26x1.95 tubes with thorn shield and put in extra slime. I run them at the highest pressure rated 65 p.s.i.

Great street tire and I have only had a few flats.

My TW9's didn't seem much looser than a typical bmx tire. It still took some good effort to pop the bead on, although I managed it buy hand. Once pumped up I doubt there would be any problems at all.
Yeh I just like having mine sit on there square to make sure its smooth! At 90 km/h it can be rough you know 8)

That slime for inner tubes does have a expiration life too.
After about a year or less it starts to degrade and gets watery and the cotton fibers bunch up into clumps making it ineffective.
I remember reading the fine print on their website a while a go about a shelf life.

WTB Graffiti street fighter tires....the best and cheap....9.99 at nashbar cycles

Also have used expensive marathon schwab tires, but i dont think these are worth the extra money and they are pure street tires.

Also a basic tire for mtb road and hard pack use is the Maxxis Holy Roller....

I have gotten some tires with similar tread that came on hub motors. The pattern was pretty good for me too. For me, a street tires always has to have some room for sand to go into when you hit the inevitable pile of sand in all the corners here in the desert. Slicks are not so good here. But my favorite urban tire sitll remains the bell tires at kmart or wallmart. Labeld a comfort bike tire, they are only 15 bucks, and wear for at least 2-3000 miles. This kevlar tire features a center rib that lowers the rolling resistance when not cornering.

Schwalbe Big Apple Tyre 2.15, just got these, been riding a couple of weeks (about 500km) with them. Haven't got a flat or wiped out yet with them. Seem pretty gripppy. I run them around 50psi, smoother ride though at 45PSI. Still messing with what the best pressure for me would be.

Got a good deal on them here:

Took a week to get to Toronto. Shipping was 24 bucks CND

Moo

Yeah, those folks have some great pricing; I just got my order in this last week. I placed the amount over the minimum limit for the free shipping and they delivered to my locale PDQ. I was home when the box arrived; when I told the guy what was in it he couldn’t believe how light it was, and I replied “Yeah!”

[pre]A box full of loot! CRC did an awesome packing job![/pre]

For P1:
  • Schawlbe Fat Frank 26x2.35 [¹´²]
  • Maxxis Hookworm Dual-Ply 26x2.5 [²]
  • Maxxis Freeride Tube 26x2.2-2.5x1.2mm thk, Schrader, Qty-3 [³]
  • Wheel Rims MT Mavic EX729 Disc 36h Black 26inch, Qty-2
  • Panaracer Flat Away Tape 40mm MtB, Qty-2
Total < $250/£160

Notes:
  1. The Fat Frank is Reflex and not Black-Skin when you order Black color. The description on the CRC website does not indicate which one nor is there a choice :?
  2. There is a profound difference in construction between the Fat Frank and Hookworm! The FF is much lighter and flexible, though the center section appears to have a thicker harder durameter. The Hookworm in contrast is just a meaty tyre all around; just what I want for the rear hub.
  3. I thought that the 1.2mm thk Freeride tubes would be thick enough but now I am concerned. Something I read said that tubes should be matched with tyres, but these seem to be quite thin. I'm glad I bought the Flat Away Tape!

P0: I run the Schwalbe Contact Reflex 26x1.75 on the front hub, and a Specialized knobby on the rear (old original I think). The front is wearing quite well; rolls easy, tough as nails, rides hard at pressure though it is mounted to Rockshox which helps a bit.

Schwalbe Fat Frank 2.35 and Big Apple 2.35 are very different tyres.

Fat Frank is for the 'looks' and lacks the grip and puncture protection of Big Apples.

Hmmm, well I’m not terribly sure about that. I rode into Seattle last month to the Bike Expo and Schwable had a booth on the first floor. Posted on Mon Mar 15, 2010 1:12 pm:
HD MtB Wheels, Tires and Rims – and the wide open desert…

There's a picture of the Big Apple 3rd from the right. While there the rep and I had a discussion about the two tyres and he said they were built with the same carcass and just the tread is different. I picked up the thick Schwable catalog and gave it a thorough review and the Fat Frank is suppose to have a slightly tougher sidewall, otherwise they spec-out exactly identical.

The only way to know for sure is to have them in hand side by side for eval; next time I'm in REI I'll see if they have both in stock and give them a touchy-feel. I can usually find one or the other but not both.

Apologies Kingfish, they do look virtually identical on specs. I could swear that 6 month ago FF had one bar for protection and one bar for grip: LBS had them in stock but I ended up ordering BA solely based on those specs.

Anyway, I'm having a good run on BA so far: 4,000km and zero flats, 25-40psi.

That is very encouraging! :D

I so can't wait to try mine out... (getting close though)

They are a bit sketchy off-road, even on fire roads.

Hey, Kingfish - how did you manage to get hold of EX729? CR has restrictions on Mavic outside of EU.

Going along with the Maxxis Hookworm suggestion: the Maxxis Holly Rollers are nice as well and might do a bit better in the dirt if you ever end up there:

You'll definitely need a rim that can support it.

As of now the Fat Franks are rated by Schwalbe as having 5 bars on sidewall protection while the Big Apple is rated at only 2 bars. Both are rated 5 bars on the tread.

I've emailed Schwalbe to explain the difference because they also describe the Fat Frank as "Technically one hundred percent equal to the Big Apple."

Swhalbe marathon plus with tyre sidewalk reflector, great for speed but also have a little grooving in them if you encounter gravel or a little mud and puncture resistance is the best with kevalr inside. You an get a pair for around £30-£40 on eBay

These almost fit a bmx without modification

I want scooter/moped tires. I have almost 7000 miles on my hookworms/cyclops, and I still don't feel comfortable riding over dirt and gravel on the road.

I am thinking a 22" rim, and the appropriate tires. 20" being too small, and 24" being too large.

Arlo - looks sexy. What mods did you have to do to make them fit? What's the total diameter?

Have you seen the 2.5x16 pirellis on my bmx? I found them 2 years ago and now a lot of the bmx wheel guys use them.
The 2.25x15 on this bmx almost fit like a stock tire. I will measure them soon for the CA calibration but they will be about 20.5" Od As for the rest I laced a motorcycle wheel to the HS35 so I could cross lace it for more strength. The front just slides right in where the stock one was!

I like these 26x1.5" (really 1.75") Specialized Nimbus slicks. They corner great and aren't overly bulky, and seem durable so far. PSI up to 80, though I only run about 35 since my bike is a rigid right now.

The reason I found the 16 inch moped tires in the first place was because I was sick of the smallest thing giving me a flat. Now I actrualy have a tire that has a substantial amount of material to puncture for a flat. I lucked out finding tires with such great grip!

Continental has an Ebike specific tire for heavy weight and high speed. The Schwalbe are a little pricey for high mileage use on the rear.

I would have to see how long they last. The drawing doesn't look like they have much rubber over the tread. I think I am going to go with a cheaper Kenda for the rear.
