Want to go SINGLESPEED what do i need?

Yes, get a spacer kit that has different sized spacers so that you can get a good chain line. If those two large spacers in the kit posted in the OP just so happen to match the chainline of the crankset I would be surprised. In addition to the Singulator, Surly sells a variety of single cogs...

    considering my first build

Ziggurat - thanks for the info. i think setting up the stand alone CA looks simple enough, so I'll do that rather than get another controller. dogman - yup, that was a typo; I meant the 36V 5A charger

    Fat Man Commuter - 270lbs on 700c

Do you know the range of twist on the throttle between closed and wide open? That might play into the decision between half or full grip.

You're right about that! I'm just about ready to order - going for MXUS rear, a123 39V 9.2Ah, and 48V 4A charger (only charging at home) all from cell_man. I also plan to get a pair of torque arms from ebikes.ca for good measure. A few questions about other stuff to complete the kit: From...

    Suspension? Folding bike?

I've been commuting on a Montague (no motor) for a while and have probably 10000+ miles on it. It has been a very solid bike and I have never thought twice about going over obstacles with it. Granted, I'm a lot lighter than you. I think the biggest downside to the Montague is the lack of...

    waste of time. don't bother.

Agreed. Even if the Kona has 145mm downhill spacing, bending an Al frame to 200mm will wreck it. With building a new swingarm it would be worth thinking about fabricating beefier links to connect the swingarm to the frame/rear shock as well.

My forks are stell and 100mm, but they are also rigid, which seems like adding the weight up there would make for a pretty harsh ride, but I'm not sure. At first I was thinking of doing the front mount since it is easier, but the rear drive should handle better. Granted, I'll mostly be...

    considering my first build

That's good news, didn't want to get in a tangle with customs. The prices that BMS has are appealing, but cell_man's reputation for quality kits has for the most part swayed me. I'd rather pay a little more upfront to have something that should last longer. That figures into the battery...

    waste of time. don't bother.

I don't know of a specific rim, but if you look at dirtbikes, you might find a front wheel that could serve as an ebike rear. I would imagine most motorcycle rear wheels will be too wide for a bicycle, unless you have a Pugsly. That said, maybe a Surly fatbike rim...

    considering my first build

A 22-23mph assist bike is what I'm looking for. I was pretty settled on the MXUS with some type of A123 battery, 36V 9.2Ah or smaller, but.... Found out that back in the old days mtb frames had 130mm dropouts rather than 135mm; of course this revelation came after purchasing the frame. So now...

    considering my first build

I was certainly considering the ability to scale up later, but it probably came off as more important than it actually is. I live in a very bike-unfriendly area and most of the places I go are still within a 3 mile radius, so any plans for more power and speed would be a ways down the road...

Jason - could you recommend a source for the lithium manganese batteries? I'm not really that concerned with the weight, but if there aren't too many other compromises it would be good the check out. dogman - What I meant by my last post was that I could see an longtail-car replacement ebike...

    considering my first build

Just to clarify, I have a regular commuter bike that is staying regular for the time being, so the GT frame that is coming is just for the ebike and will not impact my regular ride. It is a Montague folding mtb, the one with the giant top tube and no downtube (Swissbike, Hummer, Paratrooper...

Building the best commuter ebike (ever)

For the battery pack holder you could use strips/thin planks of balsa and steam them so that you can bend them into shape. Then wrap a layer or 2 of fiber glass or carbon fiber around the balsa to add strength and stiffness and still be very light. You could also go with the styrafoam core...

    Do you use a mirror?

Always have used a mirror, and since most of them fold they really don't get in the way. My commute involves a short bit of road with no shoulder or sidewalk and the mirror is very nice to have in such situations.
