    Yes,it could have come loose from the copper winding inside the hub.If you have interchangeable phase connectors,try switching them around,and see if you get the same symptoms.

    It could develop in the controller,but in the hub is more likely.

    It looks to me,that you have 16 DEAD cells. Each cell should be ~4.1v fully charged.

    I think you mean "cheapest". I've seen some brushed front hub motors,on eBay,in the $80.00 range,I don't have any links though.

    It's great to hear that you are able to be doing some cycling,in your advancing years.Most people in their late seventies have succomb to arthritis or some other affliction.
