    Yes,it could have come loose from the copper winding inside the hub.If you have interchangeable phase connectors,try switching them around,and see if you get the same symptoms.

    It's great to hear that you are able to be doing some cycling,in your advancing years.Most people in their late seventies have succomb to arthritis or some other affliction.

    Tire size is not the reason. There is only 6mm difference in circumference,between the two tire sizes. (0.28%) That motor may be a faster wind,or the upgraded phase wires could be much more efficient.
