    Yeah, e-bikes are the future

I’ve long been a holdout as a roadbike purist. but recent experience with my 11 speed road bike versus a belt drive igh mid drive e-bikes has changed my perspective. the 11 speed has always had adjustment issues. With the tolerances of road bike gear becoming smaller and smaller, they become...

Grin all-axle hub on a front suspension

So generally the advice is to not install a hub motor on a suspension fork but grin on their product page specifically mentions suspension forks as good for the front hub. Maybe a cheaper design is heavier and more durable? It seems that a lot of bicycle expense comes in weight reduction...

Grin ezee front hub with regen

It looks like this is a fairly new option. The ezee front geared hub motor with the clutch locked for regen capabilities. So pros compared to other options from grin —lower price — lower weight. This thing looks like it is 3.8kg —geared hub which gives you leverage advantage. Basically can...

How essential is torque sensing for a recumbent?

I can see the usefulness of torque sensing for a regular bike but for a recumbent?

Best sort of frame for a mid drive?

I have a bike with high end steel but I’m hesitant to install a mid drive on it. What is the best material to install? Alu?

Design Geometry of a front hub fork

In doing some research on the question of front forks housing hub motors, it appears risky. It can be done but the front fork is generally not engineered for powered applications. but what if you did engineer a front fork for power applications? What would it look like? I think that the arms...

    TSM-A5 on sale

It’s on sale at grin currently. Looks interesting. anyone here use it? It is pretty heavy so naturally I think it is best for a recumbent. But has anyone installed it onto a gravel bike? torque sensor on the cassette hub plus a cadence sensor on the bottom bracket can allow for good regen...

Steps to repurpose a bionx motor?

i had a bionx system go bad on me recently. I’m thinking about taking the motor, stripping out all of the propriety circuit boards, and just running it as a normal motor. How difficult is the job?

Ebike cadence sensors when shifting to higher gear

Since cadence sensors go by turns of the crank, when you shift to a higher gear and thus go a little slower due to resistance, doesn’t that mean the cadence sensor senses a decrease in crank rotation and so it sends out less propulsion?

Pretty close to ordering a Grin All-axle. Advice?

I’ve gotten intrigued in recent days with a direct drive front hub motor with regen. I live in a pretty hilly area and even my “acoustic” bicycles have had days where the brakes are burning. In my research, the grin all-axle direct drive should have relatively acceptable weight and the improved...

The easiest way to improve ebike safety for newbies is regenerative braking

In response to this article here. https://www.bicycling.com/culture/a42690937/molly-steinsapir-lawsuit-rad-power-electric-bike/ In short, a direct drive hub with regen programming built in would do a lot imo to improve overall bicycling safety for newbs. 1. By greatly decreasing brake pad...

Ceres egravel ebike with Acer rear hub motor

This looks interesting. https://www.ebay.com/itm/256227013915?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=5JXDPoTiTT-&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=OPon4WEiQXa&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY 9 speed sora groupset, Acer rear geared hub. I think that it has 45nm torque, likely a cadence sensor...

    Even Smaller Direct Drive Hubs

The Grin All-axle looks interesting. For about 2kg more weight you can get regen braking, as well as a better designed torque arm. What would happen if Grin made an even smaller and lighter motor? Make one that is 3kg, or even 2kg? Also, what if you took geared hub motors with broken...

Bafang g310 compared to the Mahle x35

It appears to me that the bafang g310 is roughly comparable to the hub motors used in some egravel bikes like the momentum voya e+1. The Mahle hub is 2.1 kg but overall it also appears that mahle is Oem only and the e-bikes with it are like $5k. I’m guessing that the g310 only has a cadence...

    Suspension on the hub motor

Does it make sense to put the hub motor on a suspension part of the bicycle? So for a recumbent, is it best to have a rear suspension to help deal with the weight of the hub motor?

Grin tech hub motor options compared

The main hubs that interest me are the RH212, the GMAC, the grin all-axle, and the TSM-A5. So to start off, it looks like the RH212 is extremely cheap. It has a base price of $240 whereas the GMAC is $475 and the all-axle made in house is about $700. The TSM-a5 is $550.

E-bikes are arguably worse than electric cars

The main reason is because the complete lack of thermal management of e-bike battery packs means that they destroy cells at a far greater rate than a typical liquid-cooled car. In addition, ebike motors generally have far less durability than electric vehicle motors. Hub motors tend to last...

    Experience with the Bafang m800?

A bike I’ve been looking at has the bafang m800 mid drive. How does it fare? I think an updated version the m820 has significantly more torque. Does this mean that the m800 uses nylon gears? And the new m820 uses metal gears?

Bionx system died on me mid-day

I had my Bionx P350 installed on a recumbent and it was working great. I rode to a place and stopped there for an hour, locking up the recumbent. When I returned, the system was not working. The throttle would power up but then it would flash constantly. I was able to get it working for a...

    Grin technology motor choicesstem

Hi, I’ve been interested in Grin’s tech lately. They appear to be genuine enthusiasts without any annoying MBA’s mucking things up. I have a number of applications that I think I could make use of Grin for. But to start off, the last ebike system that I used was Bionx. I thought that Bionx...
