Serious all-weather electric vehicle - wheels

Your project sounds much like the BugE. I like Mark's concept a lot, and it's on my short list of viable commuters. I'd like to see one with a little better weather protection built in storage, instead of strapping a back pack to the seat.

California 20mph ebike vs 30mph moped alternative pros & con

Check equipment requirements, too. Most times you'll find a moped will be required to have headlights, tail lights, brake-activated stop light, turn signals, DOT rated tires and a Vehicle Identification Number.

    Troubleshooting help

More info... I hooked up my SLA pack, and the motor works! Why would it work on SLA, but not lipo? SLA pack is at 51.5v, lipo is 41.4. Oh crap. There it is right there... For the SLA pack at 48v, I set the CA low volt cutoff to 44. My lipo pack is only 41.5. Resetting the CA to 38v cutoff...

    Troubleshooting help

I have an ebikes.ca 2805 front hub motor that won't go. It worked fine in the fall, when I was using SLA. I hooked up lipo for the first time, and the motor doesn't work. The cycle analyst says I have 41.4 volts. I opened the controller, and measured the hall signals and throttle signal...

Ready to cycle batteries, but have questions

Hmmm. Yet another reading of the manual, and I see that the charger is rated for about 1C charge with lipo. So, it looks like I should go with 5 amps...

Ready to cycle batteries, but have questions

Am I doing this right? I've got my lipo, and I want to do a few cycles before I build my pack - 10s2p Turnigy 5000mah 20C. I'm using a 1010B+, and will have two packs in series with balance leads attached to the charger. I've set the termination voltage at 4.15. These cells are rated at 2C...

    Will this work for pre-charge?

I've read most of the threads on pre-charge, and I don't recall seeing anyone putting the pre-charge resistor in the battery case. Could this work? This should also work when attaching the charger?

    Feedback on my noob setup

Thought more about all your comments, and came up with a new set-up that permanently parallels the the discharge and balance leads with harnesses, but still allows easy separation for pack replacement or troubleshooting. Now, no unplugging to charge. The balance harness is split into 3x four...

    Feedback on my noob setup

Andje, I used MS Visio for the diagrams. It's on my work computer. At home, I use OpenOffice Draw. If you google Visio freeware, you'll find many free programs that can do these diagrams. I'm setting up this way so I can balance at the cell level, not paralleled cells. I agree, it's a lot...

    Feedback on my noob setup

Yikes!! Just realized that my charging diagram has a major error. The two negative leads at the balance taps SHOULD NOT be paralleled. Since the packs are in series for charging, that makes the 5 tap on the upper pack electrically the same as the negative tap on the lower pack. My original...

    Feedback on my noob setup

I'll be running four 5000mah 5S packs in 10S2P for 37v 10ah. Upper and lower packs are paralleled at discharge and balance leads with Andersons in custom harnesses. For charging, using 1010B, the parallel harness is removed from the discharge leads, and the charger connection places a pair of...

What kind of case do you store your lipo's on your bike?

I'm considering something like these blow molded cases.

Should be plenty of room at Home Depot, and easy access to the bike trail.

9C came alive on 48 volts!

@dogman: Good point, I didn't think about the speed REDUCTION going from 48 to 44.4. I'll have to look at chargers more, didn't realize this was possible. It's actually how I'm running the SLAs. I used a 36v Soneil charger, and when I went to 48v I started looking for deals on 48v chargers...

9C came alive on 48 volts!

Yes, it is fun!! But, I'll probably set the CA to 25mph max, and will feather the throttle to keep my average speeds around 20. I'm a little leery of doing 29-30mph with no suspension and 40lbs of battery.

9C came alive on 48 volts!

@jmygann: Haven't ridden the same route on 48v, yet. Hopefully this coming Saturday. @veloman: Hub is DD. Probably made more stops than you. Perhaps I should count them? @Eujangles: About 60% useable capacity is what I expected. Going from 48v14ah lead to 44v10ah lipo might lose about 10%...

9C came alive on 48 volts!

A few months ago, I bought a 2805 9C in 20" wheel kit from Grin Technology, and mounted it on my recumbent bike. Being my first foray into e-bikes, I wanted to start with SLA to keep the cost down. So, I bought three 12v14ah batteries and went riding! On 36 volts, the bike maxed out at 22mph...

Advice on first ebike purchase and going forward

Thanks for the welcome and the opinions. I'd like to commute, but biking distance is about 28 miles, with an 800 ft climb from mile 22-26. I think I'd need TWO 48v20ah lifepo packs to do that. Cost benefit at $3/gal for gas would take over 300 commutes to re-coup just the cost of the...

Advice on first ebike purchase and going forward

I've been scouring the forums for a few weeks, and am ready to buy my first ebike kit. Hopefully, you all can offer some advice on my plan. I'd like to start with the WE BL36 kit from bernsonev.com. Price point is an issue, and I plan on getting the kit, along with a fourth 12v12ah SLA...
