    Winterizing your ebike

That is a good point about the salt water. Aside from the problem with electrical shorts, salt water tends to rust things awfully bad. It seems very important to rinse off, or at least dry off the bike after each ride. The cover I made for the controller is working great though, and the box...

Ibera triangle frame bags went on sale

That's a really good deal. I've been using this bag for a while, and it's pretty decent.

    Winterizing your ebike

Thanks for merging the threads, it was a great idea! Here in Michigan, we just got a pretty ridiculous amount of snow. It's icy as heck out, but the studded tires seem to be doing their job. What do people do about throttles in the winter time? Is their any risk of shorting it out in the snow??

    Winterizing your ebike

I am preparing for my first winter on my first eBike, and I thought we could share some ideas about winterization. Here is what I have been getting around on lately. As far as mounting the controller goes, this was my first option. It has been reliable so far; by that, I mean that rain has...

Winter Riding "Often or Not" Is it safe?

This Winter, IT'S ON! I am really trying to avoid buying a parking pass from the university this year. Hence, I just scooped up a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires off of eBay. On really terrible days, I suppose I'll buy a temporary parking pass just for the day, but the plan is to get...

CAD for newbs.. anyone have suggestions ?

If you are a total newb to drafting/computer aided drafting (CAD), you should go and research a little bit about "orthographic projection." Essentially, it means " representing a three-dimensional object in two dimensions." I took a drafting course a few years back, and we did everything by...

    Meanwell Chargers?

I appreciate that you took a look at the link. Thanks for pointing out the 4-pin connector, I hadn't noticed that. However, I did notice on the datasheet that there is an option to purchase a charger equipped with Anderson connectors rather than a DIN connector. My current charger isn't...

    Meanwell Chargers?

Does anyone have any experience with these chargers? I have been putting 20 - 30 miles on my bike (daily) and it is always a time crunch to charge the battery when I am home between school and work. I saw that Meanwell makes some pretty decent looking portable chargers. After I graduate in...

    Calibike batt stats with CAv2.3

That's really cool to see some actual stats. I have been riding my bike at least 20 miles every day with this battery and a 1000W rear wheel yescomusa kit, and it really gets the job done. My max speed on it is just over 32 mph, but I generally ride it around 20 mph so that I can extend the...

Building a battery box, an iterative process.

I built a wooden box for mine as well, and it is indeed an iterative process. I have been thinking about rebuilding it one more time so that I can recess the side panels inside the frame. If I do it again, I am going to try your process; it looks like a good way to get a snug box. One tip...

Is it okay to use longer wires?

Cool, thanks for the quick response. I realized it was a really noobish question, but I thought I should make sure before splicing in some extra wires. Ha! Good point.

Is it okay to use longer wires?

The wires coming out of the controller seem like they are way too short. Is it alright to splice in 6 inch pieces of wire of the same gauge, or will the increase in resistance cause more problems?

    Do electric bikes save lives?

From the research that I found, autonomous vehicles have better response time than human drivers when they encounter objects in the road that should not be there. Originally, I had the same thoughts as you. However, when you take into account that the average human reaction time is around 0.2...

    Do electric bikes save lives?

Please post some! We don't have bike paths here. I see people on normal bikes with their phones out all the time, but I haven't ever seen one on an electric bike with their phone out. I don't get it either, people should just pull over and take care of their business before they hop on a bike...

    Do electric bikes save lives?

In my traffic engineering course last semester, I wrote a term paper about autonomous vehicles (e.g. Google car). I found a source (maybe two sources) that estimated 92% of accidents in vehicles are caused by human error. I would say that bikers are generally more aware of their surroundings...

    Calibike 18650 pack repairability

The battery from CaliBike is composed of LiNiCoMnO2 (NMC) cells. It is surprisingly light at 10 lbs compared to a Ping LiFePO4 battery, which weighs about 16 lbs at 48v 15ah. I seriously considered Lipos, but I have to consider my neighbors. I live on the top floor of an apartment building...

    Calibike 18650 pack repairability

I have one of these packs, too. It is alright, but if I were to do it again, I would have built it myself. Rafe sent me a replacement after my original battery was damaged during shipping, but he had me open the pack and check the bms. It is indeed a 7s13p pack with 91 cells total.

    Pacemaker Questions?

Dude, that story is outrageous. I am not even sure what to say... the murder twist was really ironic, especially after he had the surgery. They had to have been married for a long time, right? This whole ordeal saddens me.

    Broken Freewheel

Thanks a lot, everybody. I always carry zip ties on me, but I'm not sure I would have ever thought to use them if the freewheel breaks! I think I'll call around about a tool/freewheel before I order online. Anyone know if I can take the freewheel off an old wheel and use it, or do I need to...

    Broken Freewheel

I hadn't thought of checking the motor cover, but I will be sure to check that out. I am still pretty sure that it's the freewheel. There have been a few times when I have wheeled the bike backwards; the pedals/gears/chain stop moving; and if I continue to wheel the bike backwards, eventually...

    Broken Freewheel

Earlier, I went to pedal the bike and the cranks just slipped. Now, the chain turns, but the the rear wheel doesn't spin. I'm pretty sure the freewheel broke. Any advice on where I can get a new (and decent) freewheel for the bike? Do I need any special tools to remove the old one?

How do I weed out the junk in the world of 48v 1000w kits?

I ordered this kit from yescomusa.com and I am quite happy with it. It's quick, I haven't had any trouble with hills yet, and the LCD has five programmable levels of assist (and you can set a max speed, if you wish). The only thing I don't really care for is the thin rim that the motor is...

    Graphene

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying here. If it's good enough to just add more batteries, we would all be riding around SLAs. If lithium sulfur batteries make it to market, and they end up being all that they are claimed to be, it could be awesome. I'm running a 48v15ah battery...

Show Us Your Homemade Battery Housing

Mine is incredibly simple. I mounted some L-brackets to a 11" piece of wood, and then I mounted it to the water bottle holder. I used a counter sink drill bit so that the bolt heads were recessed into the wood. The battery itself goes inside of a CD case! It works great, but I plan on...
