E-Bike Act, USA , Reintroduced In Congress

It appears this doesn’t allow for retrofit motors and batteries, from a very brief cursory glance, but only to purpose built Ebikes.

This is a drawback because (as most people here are probably aware) brand name purpose built Ebikes are often much more expensive, if cheaper don’t ride as well, have very expensive proprietary batteries when batteries need replacement after a few years, motors are generally not as powerful as those available for DIY retrofits, and the motor and battery can’t be moved to a new frame when the bike owners’s needs change or the bike is no longer suitable.

Any analysis of the bill is interesting for how a similar policy could be pitched in Australia.

The major limitation we have here of course is that speed is limited to 25km/h for pedal assist compared with 45km/h in the US, power is limited to 250w compared with 750w in the US and throttle-only use limited to 6km/hr here.
