I posted about Mike Corbin's 1973 LSR bike recently, and it got me searching for the history of electric motorcycle Land Speed Records and attempts. I've spent the last 3 days googlin', and have virtually nothing. Is there anybody out there who has any information? Next step is to email the sanctioning organizations - the timing associations and AMA and FIM like that.

The post on Mike's bike is here, if you're interested: http://evmc2.wordpress.com/2013/11/23/the-electric-garage-the-corbin-quicksilver/

hmmmmm, your google kungfu is very weak :)

http://inhabitat.com/216-mph-electric-killajoule-motorcycle-shatters-world-land-speed-record/

Lightning, mission one and Yates all did runs but i think thats in the front atm for overall motorbike record......tho its a streamlined purpose built trike

Lightening is probably the fastest in the normal motorbike catagory with fairing at 206mph

Interesting to see the Technical Director of World SuperBikes built an electric bike for Max Biaggi to take the speed record in 1994.

150 - 300 Kg class

04. 06. 1994
Fabio Fazi
135.071 km/h

05.06.1994
Max Biaggi
164.198 km/h

Recent records can be found on the FIM website.

http://www.fim-live.com/en/sport/world-records-attempts/events/

Over 300 Kg class

29. 08. 1996.
Bruno Bonhuil
185.503 km/h
178.357 km/h

02. 09. 2010
Paul Thede
Bonneville (USA)
Lightning Moto 1
278.977 km/h
278.933 km/h

30.08.2011
Chip Yates
Bonneville (USA)
Swigz ProRCG
316.899 km/h
316.107 km/h

The fairing on the Lightning bike was as closed to being a streamliner without fully enclosing the front wheel as it is possible to get.

Sadly nobody differentiates a 'standard' street or race fairing and something more specialised.

aaaah, no grasshopper. I'm looking for the historic records, back to the Dawn of Records.

Thanks Mike, that's a start. I do also have this: http://wiki.electricracenews.com/history/electric-motorcycle-land-speed-record-history.html

That shows nothing between Mike's run in 1974 and 2009. I've seen claims that he held the record for 30 something years, so that makes sense I guess. ...but is that it?

(edit: duh, right, 1994, 96. Are those really kph?)

Lightning ran as a partial streamliner (APS) and set the SCTA record at 215.960 mph at Bonneville in 2011 Speed Week. The record still stands and it was the first electric powered 2 wheel vehicle to record a verified 200 mph or faster run. That was historic.

holy crap my haid hurtz.

It took a lot longer than I thought to sift through all the stuff, but here's what I have:
http://evmc2.wordpress.com/2013/11/28/electric-motorcycle-land-speed-records/

I still have some cleanup to do on it, but if you see any omissions or errors, please let me know. I'm sure it's going to be a work in progress.

It's coming along. I like to see stuff like this. You do realize you are just listing Bonneville and there are other LSR venues? Like:
http://www.scta-bni.org/ELMirage.html
http://ecta-lsr.net/
Similar things in Australia and Great Briton.
And the Texas Mile.

I saw where the guys at NEDRA were trying to put together some type of electric speed record keeping system but I don't think it materialized. Spiderman hit 200mph on the drag strip. Does that count?

Roderick Wilde (past NEDRA president) claims to be an EV historian. Maybe he'd be worth talkin' to.

Thanks - yeah, I've actually listed Loring, Bonneville and El Mirage if you take a look. I was aware of those organizations, but haven't found any listings for historical records. As far as I understand it, though, the FIM is the presiding, sanctioning organization over worldwide LSR records, aren't they?

ted or anyone,
has anyone tried to run an electric 2 wheel streamliner?

that killajoule "sidecar" is slow for a strealiner at only 216mph.

Killajoule started that way but added the 3rd wheel. 2-wheel streamliners are tricky. Hell, streamliners are tricky. I've worked on one and it's a bitch no matter how many wheels you use. But to answer your question, I don't think anyone has gone over 70 mph in a 2-wheel electric streamliner or actually made a record run. Of course you have a few gas 2-wheel streamliners that do well over 300mph.

yeah, i remembered reading that.
and how they were going for the overall record beating gas...
and never heard anything more about it.

on a side note, the jet reaction streamliner looks interesting,
(and the castrol rocket also)

Kent Riches' bike was a full 2-wheeled streamliner:
Jun-09 Kent Riches SUU, Riches-Nelson Racing 176.434 mph

Yeah, you're right. The streamliner page has been up for several years now. I'm not sure what-all they're up to now.

I just noticed Rod has a web site: http://www.hevf.org/ Historic Electric Vehicle Foundation

Yes, cool project. He's been in touch with me, actually. Got me thinking about doing a similar list for drag racing. :D
