Looks like GoPro is releasing it's brand new HERO3 action camera and it looks awesome! Who's getting one of these?

No word yet on when it's supposed to hit the retail stores but GoPro is already taking pre-orders. The $399.99 USD is a pretty hefty price but I guess some people will buy it because it already comes with the Wi-Fi remote, new better video, new better lens (now looks sharp below water as well as above), and new better audio.

2X Faster Video Performance

The HERO3: Black Edition captures professional, cinema-quality video at 2X the resolution and 2X the frame-rate of previous models while delivering 2X better low light performance. Slow-motion aficionados and industry professionals will love the HERO3: Black Edition's 1080p-60, 720p-120, WVGA-240, 960p-100 and 1440p-48 video modes while those desiring a cinematic look will appreciate the ultra-high resolution 2.7kp-24 and 4kp-12 (Protune only) video modes.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3X Faster Photo Performance

The HERO3: Black Edition's photo performance is 3X improved, now boasting 12MP burst capture at a staggering 30 frames per second with 2X better low light performance compared to previous models. Still Photo and Time-lapse Photo modes remain the same but are now joined by a new Continuous Photo mode that captures continuous 12MP stills at a steady 3, 5, or 10 photo-per-second rate, up to 30 photos at a time.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Improved Sharpness, Less Distortion

The HERO3's reduced-distortion, 6-element aspherical lens combines with user-selectable Ultra-wide, Medium and Narrow field-of-views to deliver more perspective-capture options than ever before. Add the totally updated flat-lens waterproof housing that delivers stunning image sharpness both above and below water and you've got one of the most powerful and durable image capture solutions on the planet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Redesigned Audio System

Understanding that sound quality is as important as image quality, GoPro engineers completely redesigned the HERO3 to be as adept at capturing the subtle, natural sounds of voice and music as it is at capturing the immersive sounds of sport. Also improved is GoPro's already famous wind-noise reduction, ensuring that you'll hear more of your passion, be it your engine or expletives, and less of the wind during high speed activities.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Built-in Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi Remote Included)

The HERO3 Black Edition features built-in Wi-Fi and includes GoPro's Wi-Fi Remote accessory. The Wi-Fi Remote is normally available as a $79.99 accessory but is included with the HERO3: Black Edition. The Wi-Fi Remote is waterproof, wearable and can control up to 50 Wi-Fi-enabled GoPros at a time from a range of 600'. The HERO3's built in Wi-Fi means it can also be controlled by iOS or Android smartphones and tablets running the GoPro App. The GoPro App enables full camera control and live scene preview on any compatible iOS or Android smartphone or tablet

Looks amazing... so many good choices now with the Contour+2, and Sony ActionCam and now the Hero 3 BLACK

The Sony and the GoPro seem like the only ones that can handle 720p at 120fps. Sony has (what amounts to) hardware stabilization, so the front runner's for my $400 are the GoPro and the Sony.

Seems like GoPro put up a solid response to Sony's first attempts.

I'm so buying the Hero3 black edition. That thing is amazing! Just 5 years ago camera technology like that weighed 10lbs, was the size of a shoebox and cost $30,000.

Count me in for one of the Black Edition as well. Too good to pass up for the price!

You getting one Sacman?

I'm getting a black too, I already have a waterproof cam that does all what the other models do. I'm actually tempted to get rid of my T2i and go full gopro...

The Black Edition shoots 4K video (@12fps)

BTW, on slickdeals there is a thread showing a pre-order with 10% off code. Makes it $360.... even more sexy

Amazon has the Hero 2 now for $199.

Price are going to drop for all sorts of cameras with this thing out.

I found a 50% off deal for a Liquid Imago EGO. It is supposed to be comparable to the Hero 2 in terms of performance, but in a smaller package. Some cool features in it including Android Support.

This will definitely mean I'm not getting a Hero 3 right away. Probably for the best since I got a full package with waterproof case for $150 shipped. I'll just have to wait until the Hero 3 Black drops to $250 in a year and a half to even it out.

I don't see the point in trying to save $100 on the silver when this one is so. . . .

Anyone ever tried to plug mics into one of these for better sound?

Black edition surf comes with waterproof housing.

I've done many tests with a bunch of mics plugged into my Hero2.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYG9Ed9k78g for the Sony ECM clone $3ish

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MimDN2fxIao for a $1 tie clip lavalier mic

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLoq4Arcx80 for a PC desktop microphone $1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXNHYl-TRTU for a Griffin multi-purpose stereo microphone ~$20 when you can find it. You can hear the dreaded cricket noise in the video.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F0V4D03l-8s mono HTDZ HT320A shotgun microphone also with the cricket noise.

All-in-all, with most of my tests, the sound just wasn't very good with any mic into the HD Hero2. The only solution I can think of is to go with a Zoom H1 or other external recorder and marry the sound in post.

Note that the HD Hero3 Black needs an adapter in order to use an external microphone. That kind of kills it for rugged situations like on a bike. The connector adapts the mini-USB port into a microphone in port...

Hey, there's nothing I hear there I fault the GoPro for. I have things like ECM55's. It used to be consumer equipment wasn't capable of recording decent sound, even HiFi tracks could be sour. I like what I'm hearing.

The Canon XL1,2, etc. and equivilent Sony's found there way into broadcast, or at least cablecast, but needed adapters such as a mixer that would attach underneath to accept XLR plugs from professional audio equipment then plug into the miniplugs on the camera itself.

Dude wow
You are inspiring awe
old tech
Now available to suckers who "go pro"
Please more videos of underwater mermaids
Check out how small my shite is
It is all about the glass unless you have a liquid lens
But liquid still cant beat glass
But glass is liquid

The GoPro 2 has an AGC circuit in the audio chain that produces an audible cricketing noise when used with some microphones. Be sure to test your macs in a quiet setting and see if that's a problem for you! :)

My first effort to play with my first GoPro, this being the Black Edition. WHERE do you plug in that mic? There's a hole on the touch screen that I added, is there nothing on the camera without that?

This puppy is a bit of a culture shock to a veteran professional cameraman. No charger, just plug into your computer USB, assuming you're not otherwise some Luddite who doesn't use computers.

Before using your HERO3 camera, a product update is required.

Yeah, it's a whole new world. Still looking forward to it in some ways.
