Toying around with an idea, and I wonder if anyones seen something similar?

Building a lightweight trike to use a small (ish) electric motor. say an etek or mars to drive the vehicle at low speeds (and be geared accordingly) say to about 35 or 40.

Then have a direct drive small diesel running via a centrifugal clutch with just the one speed to take over above 35 or 40 to drive it to highway speeds driving the other side of the wheel on a separate sprocket.

One obvious problem, there may be others ;) would be the electric motor "generating" when driven to a higher rpm in "highway mode"

a freewheel hub would cure this no?

Anyone seen one capable of this kind of use?

You might try searching go-cart drivetrains and then combining for two inputs.

There are a variety of tiny diesels with one or two cylinders, used for generators or pumps and such. Yanmar 's are from China.

If you want a turbo-diesel because of its widely variable power under load, and fuel-sipping capability when just cruising, Kubota makes an 1100cc 3-cylinder. Its somewhat pricey but the Kinetics Max is getting 80-MPG with that engine alone.

Adding an electric motor would be fantastic.
