I asked my buddy to write a message describing the problem to you guys. Please let me know what you think and where we might start to diagnose the problem.

(his message)

Hi, I recently converted my mountain bike to an ebike.

Here are the specs....

battery pack: 48V 8Ah NiCad
charger: 48V 2A
Crystalyte 407 rear motor
Crystalyte 36-48V 20A Start Immediate Brushless Controller
Crystalyte Thumb Throttle

The controller and battery pack are housed in a Top Peak Commuter Bag

The parts I sourced from ebikes.ca

The conversion was done by a local neighbourhood bike specialist.
Worked perfectly as I used it to commute to work for a bout a month and a half.

Now the bad news...
I was caught in an unexpected almost tornado like down pour, during the first night of The Tastes of Little Italy food fair. For about 20 minutes my self and the bike were pounded by sleets, SLEETS of rain and hail - I barely made it home. During the deluge I never lost power, nor any fluctuation in power. My little bike got me home - I was very happy.

My attention once getting home turned to the bike and the pack. To my surprise everything inside the pack seemed dry and fine. I opened the pack to let any moisture that may be there to evaporate.

The next day I took my bike out, a little concerned... but then I was re leaved when it continued to perform just as pre-soaked. I rode it from my place to my sisters, which is basically equal to my daily commute.

There my bike sat for a night, I then charged my bike. It was left charged in there for 1 day and a half maybe 2 days. Having read and been informed that this charger is a smart charger I did not worry about it.

Two days later - I collect my bike to find it has no, power whatsoever. In the hall of her building with my thumb down on the throttle curious as to why there is no power - the bike appears to leap out of my hands!!!!!

I take the bike to the street and PEDAL - wasn't used to that anymore (hehe)
Still no power. Half way home i notice that if I pulse the throttle I get short bursts of energy not lasting more that a second or two. Finally get home now really concerned.

On the advice of a friend I unplugged all the connections, opened the pack bag again and let it sit for 2 more days. I then gave what it took as a full charge. Took it for a ride last night and not only no power, no pulsating power. But as I once reached a Brisk Peddled speed the motor actually kinda turned over or on and when I applied the throttle, the entire bike began to shake and began to slow down. A similar feeling as if I was using the gears of a car to slow down.

I have no idea what is going on or how to try and fix this - does anyone have any ideas?

...Thanks guys! I want to help him, but I figured it would be better to ask for advice on where to start looking before making a mess. :D

My first guess is moisture in the controller, poss the throttle is shorted by water. I'd disconnect, open them and dry em with a hairdryer... put contact cleaner (or wd40) on the connections and try again.

I would also open the motor just to dry it... water can get in through the cable channel and it's hard for it to get out.
