Bicyclists prepare for Mt. Washington bike race

AP / August 15, 2012

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Six hundred cyclists are heading to New Hampshire to compete in the annual Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb.

Saturday’s race is a grueling 7.6 mile climb up the highest mountain in the northeastern United States. The men’s record stands at 49 minutes, 24 seconds. The women’s is 58 minutes, 14 seconds.

The race is so popular with hardcore cyclists that registration was filled within four days of opening in February. Riders pay a $350 entry fee and raise donations for the Tin Mountain Conservation Center in Albany, N.H.

A 13-year-old cyclist from New Mexico — riding in his fourth Auto Road race — leads the fundraising pack with $4,200 in pledged donations.

If weather on the mountain is too dicey Saturday, the race will be moved to Sunday.

Mt Washington is a great experience, great bicycle climb. I put a mtn bike cassette on my road bike for that race when I did it in 2001. My time was about 71 minutes (road cyclist, pedal only), so I was at 6-7mph most of the time. It would be a great challenge for ebikes. I'm not sure if they have an open category for them though. Sprinting the last steep pitch at the finish was a blast. Big crowd.

Looks like a start in the right direction, just pay 12 bucks, sign a waiver and your off.

This is a great event.

We did it two different years, in about 45 min. Yes, these were strong E bikes, with E tek motors that can't be stalled...

Great hill, very steep. Need to have some real brakes.

So much for thinking about building a Pikes Peak ebike....

As far as I can tell, the 'competition field' for ebikes is the daily commutes on our roadways. I pretty much win every day, even if I am not the fastest.

 yeah, not so hard to win that one, eh?
